Power 96-2...wow, what is it?

Why do I like this station so much? It's dance, but not like Energy 98 or the old Energy 9275 or Party 93-1. I know there is a lot of 12" mixes going on but I just really like what I hear and can't turn it off. And for 64K, it sounds great! Maybe it's that digital HD thing going on. Anyway, just wondered if other dance fans were having the same reaction.

The few times that I tuned in ALL that I heard were 12"/Club mixes. Unless I'm at a club or listening to a mixshow - this would be a definite tune-out for me. Do we really need to hear 7 minutes of Jenn Cuneta? Can you imagine a curious non-dance fan tuning in and hearing 2 minutes of intro/outro beats? It would just put the final nail in the coffin for them. "That TECHNO stuff really is just BOOM, BOOM, BOOM"

Perhaps I'll take notice when the station stops sounding like an afterthought devoid of any care.

I totally agree Justin. Unless it's a mixshow and even then sometimes they have club edits, 10 min club mixes aren't meant for radio all the time. I would get bored and switch the dial to something else. Less is more here I think.

A lot of the "club mixes" arent avail in radio edits. I say play em. If its a good bangin house track... then it wont seem like a 7 minute song.

If a song does not grab the listener in 45 second, it's over. The listener is gone.

Remixes are a bad idea on the radio. I'm a dance fan and I can't stand them on the radio. Who wants 2 minutes of intro typically used by the DJ to beatmatch. I want the song right here, right now, and I want it less than 4 minutes long.

The only format in commercial radio that can do a 10 minute song is Classic Rock because Pink Floyd or Led Zeppelin listeners are willing to listen to it. No one else is.

It's a impatient planet in 2005.

guess we view things differently.

If a song does not grab the listener in 45 second, it's over. The listener is gone.

Seriously.. how do you know this? Are you going by radio geek opinions (like people who eat, breathe, and (BLEEP) radio.. like us?), or CHR standards? Nobody knows in this format. Nobody knows what works. If they did then there would be a dance format in every major city in the USA.

if its a 10 minute song of a PROMO ONLY vocal trance song.. yea.. thats too much... but if its a 10 minute bangin' tribal house or progressive song.. bring it... you cant cut those types up no matter how good of a program director you are.. they arent meant to be cut up.. if these types are chopped up to hell and back then the song has no meaning and doesnt sound right... Keep the 10 minute motorcyle/bubblegum type songs down to a minimum.. and bring the heat with the songs that dont have 4 minute chopped up radio edits...

This station is not going after radio geeks like us.. or a mass appeal audience that lives in Kentucky.. Its Miami. The only city in the USA that has (7) 24 hour nightclubs.- the way Party should have ran their station.. or did we all forget that Party tried catering to the "mass" audience and failed miserably? only my opinion.
______________

The evidence is everywhere. Have you ever seen a CHR play long edits of songs? Often in America, they cut the edit down even shorter.

As for dance, the hard-core club fan might enjoy 10 minute remixes, but that hard core fanbase is very small in numbers.

Ratings for mixshows are usually lower than when the station plays the typical radio edit. The only example of a good quarter hour remix is Danny D on Z103.5 on the Drive at 5. But Danny D does what others do not. He takes the best meat of the song and mixes it in, then drops the rest of it. So Oceanlab became a two minute song into Motorcyle, etc.

I don't believe Party failed. To my knowledge, Party 93.1 billed quite well, owned their demo and did quite well in the ratings. In fact, outside of a single bad book, their numbers were decent in a competitive city like Miami. What's most likely is that Cox figured the Rock market would make them MORE cash than dance would.....and there was no active rock station in Miami. Their overall numbers are lower than what Party typically had, but they might bill more (and in radio, billing = everything).

Day by day I dont think people want remixes and 12 minute anthems. They want the meat of the song. Even in clubland, I never found it was useful to spin 10 minute songs, unless it was some underground hard-core club. The standard club audience doesn't mind a build up, but a remix of a radio edit seemed to keep their interest longer.

I kinda like what Danny D does...a non stop mix but just the meat of the song. It's very captivating to hear in a club and I can tell you from personal experience, if the floor is a sign of success this guy is the man. 2-3 minutes of big anthems, just the meat, then right into the next one. He doesn't even build up to the song, but comes pounding into the best part of it.

It takes about 3 minutes to edit a track down to a radio edit version, it's not rocket science. There's no effort WHATSOEVER being put into these sub channels right now. They're a burden on an already over multi-tasked PD, MD or APD. They dont' give a (BLEEP), throw anything on and let it roll until it comes time to actually run it, which I doubt will ever come.

A 7 minute Jessica simpson song called "The Boots are going to walk all over you" is a lot different than a 7 minute club hit (not dance hit) but club hit. One of these days, people will realize that there is more to this format than what Promo Only Mainstream Radio CDs are putting out each month.

Also.. I have not heard one single 10 minute version of a song on that station... someone needs to fix their time clock. i believe the 10 minute comment is called an exageration

yea yea yea.. Party was awesome and billed well.. whatever... if they billed well they wouold not be a rock station.
______________

Wrong. A 10 minute tribal house track is nothing more than a dragged out waste of time, same with the progressive. None of it makes sense because it sounds like it never ends, you can cut it ALL anywhere and no one other than you would know, if that. But then, why would you be playing any of that crap on the radio? I can't think of anything more repulsive than a 707 out of control 24 hours a day.

This station is on autopilot, they're throwing anything they can into the system to actually have a station. No one over there cares [right now] because they don't have time to, they're too busy running the radio station that counts right now. It's just "get something on" and that's it.

Yea, like people not on this board.

so i guess all of the after hours clubs in downtown.. all of the edm clubs on the beach.. and all of the edm clubs at the casino are there for the tourists? Is there a reason why there is a new club opening up every other month playing the same music that you are calling nonsense? I guess people like to go out to clubs listening to nonsene all night huh?

Sure, if it's the Birdcage.
whatever that means.

This is a business mate. Cox is a reasonably sized player in the business and the mandate of business is to maximize profit. If Party was making 10 dollars, and a group of consultants said that a rock format could make 11 dollars, the station will go rock. Read Lowry Mays comment on what radio is about.

These Boots was also did by KonKan back in the late 80s. KonKan is Barry Harris, who I think was Mr Thunderpuss. If you can find the song, give it a listen. It beats Ms Simpson anyday (not that it's hard).

Musiclover II,

I usually agree with your assessments 100%, but in this case have you spent significant time listening to Power 96-2? I agree, it is on automatic and long version after long version can get old but it isn't doing that every song out right now and the song selection is great! I'm one that enjoys some of the long version 'nonsense'. Yes, every once in awhile it gets annoying but 95% of the time this station sounds tremendous. Like I said, most of the time you hit the center of the bullseye on this message board, but this time I respectfully disagree (to an EXTENDED point). Pun intended.
