Power 96 Sounding Like a CHR/Pop Station

Never thought I would see the day that Power 96 sounded like a CHR/Mainstream Pop station. It is somewhat jarring to hear songs like "Radioactive" on Power. I guess we can say that Power really have the market to Cox and now CC.

Rhythmic music is back on a pop kick again. This is a smart move for power to do a shift. "Radioactive" has crossed over on many charts. "Royals" is another song that has mass appeal on all formats (including rhythmic). WEDR and the new 103.5 will battle for hip hop listeners. Power will pull from Y-100. I would say it is a smart programming move. However, the proof will be in the next books (or what ever the ratings giant is calling them now).

Power has always adapted well to the changes. From top 40, freestlyle, the "Miami Sound" Churban, Hip-hop, and now back to rhythmic pop.

My only critique is the website. Not very impressive.

But is "Radioactive" really a crossover Rhythmic hit? I just think of the Power 96 that I grew up with; while I prefer CHR/Pop stations to CHR/Rhythmic ones, I cannot imagine the Power 96 of the early 1990s and beyond playing songs like this.

Yes, like now there were a few pop crossovers. At WAIL FM in Key West we played a percentage of pop crossover hits. We were a churban also. A good example was Duran Duran and the "Reflex". Not really a dance song, but did well on dance crossover stations. There were several more, but age has taken a toll on my mental music database :)

Back in the very early 90s, Power 96 used to play selected non-Rhythmic songs during the midday and afternoon drive shifts. If I am not mistaken, this happened when Kid Curry was the PD. But these songs were often mixed or sped up. After 6 PM, Power was all Rhythmic all the time. In more recent years, Power seemed to be turning exclusively in the direction of 99 Jamz. I guess we now know who won.

With that said, I think Power sounds pretty good in its current form.
