power 96 sunday.. an observation

was listening sunday afternoon and heard darudes sandstorm in regular rotation... didnt they break the song in the us back in 00?

A few comments and food for thoughts.. Anyone pay attention to wpows current playlist.. alot of songs are over 125bpms, and sound like 2008 freestyle records..

ps why doesnt pulse 87 have love is gone in rotation.. it would seem a good idea for miami and ny to both have stations pushing a potential hit record..

Power 96 actually didnt play "Sandstorm" a whole lot in regular rotation. Even though they were all over KayCee's "Escape" a few months earlier, and it was a success with their younger demos, I think Power got cold feet when it came time to play harder Dance titles. So while "Sandstorm" was huge on in Orlando on 95.3 Party, and in Tampa on both Wild 98.7 and 93.3 FLZ (top 10 or top 5 on both stations, remember those days? Zombie Nation was big on FLZ too at the time) it wasnt getting as much radio play down in Miami. Funny thing is that it was a huge club record in Miami, and I wouldnt be surprised if George Acosta was one of the first American DJs to break it as at the time he was still the resident DJ at the Shadow Liunge (RIP - my alltime favorite club in SoBe). It picked up airplay at a lot of the big CHR/Pop stations across the country, including loads of spins on Z-100 New York. KTU, b/c it leaned on an older audience, didn't really support it much - again ironic since KTU was supposed to be the Dance station.
So which Miami station did play a lot of it? Party 93.1 of course, once it debuted.

Cool to hear about Power 96 now playing it as a Gold title. Let me know if you notice any other Dance songs as you'd already mentioned you heard Real Mccoy being played the other week.

i remember hearing sandstorm all the time on power, along with fiori's if i, robin fox's i see stars, and mellow trax's outta space... and then ayla pt 2...

Power 96 definitely played Fiori's "If I" (they broke the record), Mellow Trax "Outta Space" (they broke the record), and "Ayla Part II".
As for "Sandstorm", they did play it, especially in afternoons (when DJ Laz was still doing afternoons), but it was never as big on the station as it should have been.
Speaking of "Sandstorm", that reminds me of the old Wild 98.7 Techno boards. If you recall, we both joined it around the same time. You had posted some of your favorite joints, I replied and mentioned Darude's "Sadnstorm" as a hotly tipped record. This was months before almost anyone heard about it in the US, and a good several months before any of the clubs in Tampa even picked up on it (I think Chris Craze who had a residency at Club Empire was among the first in town). You loved the record right off the bat, and I remember you also got into records like Beam & Cyrus "Thunder In Paradise". Remember when we use to bitch about some of the Funky Breaks records, and we had guys like DJ Wicked join the board? ;D
Do you still stay in touch with any of the board regulars? Hugo? Tiffany? Brian? Vanessa? I even remember DJ Rox, LOL.

Very interesting thread! I'm very happy to hear that Sandstorm was played as a recurrent, and I shadow CHRles' sentiment about a lot of the other listed stongs- they were much more popular on Power. Hopefully some of them can get into rotation soon. Have any one else noticed some of their 5pm mixes are now all dance music? Heard one the other week that played Bob Sinclar - Rock This Party, among many other gold titles (including Real McCoy). I wrote down the songs from the set somewhere, but I think I lost that list between moving to my new apartment. Hope everyone on Spring Break this week is having a safe, enjoyable break.

Im having a lonely depressing spring break. This is my first Spring break ive spent as a single guy in over 7 years.

Anyway, back to the music,,, Didnt Power 96 play a Breaky Version of Kaycee-Escape, or am I thinking of Orlando's old 953 Party? It had robotic vocals that go, there's no place to run, there's no place to hide, you've got to escape. I dont remember Power 96 playing Zombie Nation, but I know for a fact that FLZ did. Even WMGI was playing Zombie Nation at night, during the same time WMGI was also playing I'll fly with you, and Omni bus,,, Remember that Cheesy German Dance song?

Both Power 96 and 95.3 Party played the original Trance version to "Escape" in rotation. 95.3 Party added it a couple of weeks after Power did. I remember how excited I was driving through downtown Orlando and hearing it on the radio. The Breakbeat remix was only played in some of the mix shows, like FLZ's House Party, and these days is played from time to time on XM's BPM in regular rotation.
