Power 99 is back?

Noticed that all of the stunt formats are adultish formats

I actually heard them stunt twice for rhythmic-leaning CHR - mostly songs that Q100 is already playing, and adding in LMFAO, Martin Solvig..., and a bunch of other CHR tracks that Q100 is skipping...

(Already posted this in another thread) but, there's a quote from Jan Jeffries on AllAccess that seems to confirm that he feels comfortable putting a rhythmic-leaning CHR on 97.9 in the same market as adult-leaning Q100

Unless I'm misinterpreting the quote, 97.9 is going to be rhythmic (or youth)-leaning CHR

Sounding kinda jazzy right now.

The only thing I can be sure of is, whatever they make it, I doubt I'll be interested.

My sodium level will reach an incredible height this week because I'm taking everything I see and hear with a grain of salt. I'm keeping my hopes low so no matter what happens, I'll still be forced to be excited and pleasantly surprised at some level! All this chr talk and the amount of people being lead to believe it might happen is making me believe there's no way it could happen because it seems like a "Radio Punk'd Set Up".

Does anyone know any market where the same owner has a rhythmic and a chr within the same town? Maybe I should explore this stuff more often...

By the way, how strong is 97.9's signal? Isn't that the same channel people were complaining 99X having to broadcast in mono on? Oh, and in addition to this, if this whole signal swap and new format flip could just seemingly come out of no where that fast, doesn't this mean ClearChannel could also easily secretly have something up their sleeve for WWVA in regard to switching to stronger signals at any time?

Clear Channel owns the CHR and the Rhythmic in Boston - and in New York, they own two CHRs

From the Jan Jeffries quote, it seemed like they were gonna put rhythmic-leaning CHR on 97.9 (not even just Rhythmic)

97.9 comes in fine in Gwinnett. Probably better than 100.5 taking WSSL's co-channel interference into account. I don't have any idea why they thought they had to turn the stereo off.

99.1, on the other hand, has some interference spit (but not bad for only 99 watts). 99.1 and WCON 99.3 seem to be playing nicely with each other. But they still have the stereo on...

93.7 is almost unlistenable. Since it's the same 250W as 97.9 on the same stick, it must be interference. Who is co/first-adjacent channel with 93.7?

While CHR/R would make for a good flanker for CHR/M Q100, that would aim them right at Wild and maybe some of Radio One's stuff. Then again, 97.9 would be good intown fill that wouldn't overlap Wild's poor intown coverage too much. Still, if 97.9 went CHR/R, that would put a lot of pressure on Wild, and in the end CC would probably be forced to flip Wild to something else (coughWGST-FMcough).

CHR/R would be a good choice if they can force Wild to flip out of the format.

That's actually a really good point IMO - from the stunting it seems like they're thinking CHR/Pop with a rhythmic slant (rather than straight Rhythmic), but it might be they're thinking that a youth/rhythmic-leaning CHR would take more current Wild listeners than Q100 listeners

I don't think putting a straight Rhythmic format on 97.9 would make much sense, since that format already exists on Wild - but if Cumulus puts a CHR/Pop than leans Rhythmic on 97.9, a lot of people might flip from Wild to hear the broader variety of music (that still includes a lot of youth-leaning/dance-leaning tracks)

I would feel EXTREMELY bad for Wild if this new station turned out to be a Rhythmic and forced Wild to flip.

Now, could they launch a rhythmic chr just to mess with WWVA, attempt to cause them to fail and flip , THEN flip the format again as soon as WWVA changes? Hmmmm....

BUT.... BUT!!!!

What if they (WiLD) DON'T flip? What if, instead, it only forces WiLD to go on a STRONGER signal?

ey? ey? ;)

What an optimist I am today!

By the way, where are they going to find new people to fill in as on-air personalities for this new 97.9? Can they use any of the former Beat members? (I feel a resurrection of a past touched on topic coming here...) Oh, and how does having two chr's benefit Cumulus? Is it better to have one station do well and another completely different format on a different station to keep from stealing from your other one, OR can you also be judged/rated based on how all your stations are doing altogether?

Oh, and if I were WiLD / ClearChannel and 97.9 did go rhythmic, I would think "Well look at this! I'm not the only one who thinks a rhythmic should be tried here" and use that as ammunition to go at it full force with 97.9 and move WiLD to a more powerful, competitive signal.

The "Well my idea turned out so good that others are jumping in on it, so I might as well do it full force and try to outshine everyone else" mentality would kick in.

However, these are just hypothetical thoughts and questions here! This doesn't mean I'm getting my hopes up. My sodium level still remains high...

It's all about the Benjamins, period. Many groups of stations will sell more than one station to a single ad buyer as a package deal to keep all of that buyer's ad dollars in their house. If you're selling, say, zit cream you could get many more spots and impressions for just a little bit more money if you're willing to run spots on 2 sister stations--especially if one is strong and one is weak. That's money that (in this case) Cumulus can keep from going to CC (in this case).

The thing is, would moving WKLS' rock format or Bull to 105.7/96.7 (with Wild on 94.9 or 96.1) kill one or both of the stations unintentionally?

The only two signals with a comparable range to Q100 are 94.9 and 96.1 I believe, so you'd have to do a frequency swap by putting country or rock on 105.7/96.7 and then Wild on 94.9 or 96.1...

Yeah, I mean look at how Clear Channel controls Boston - they own the only CHR and the only Rhythmic (which double a lot of the same songs), and both have top-of-the-market ratings because no one else dares compete against either one

I also think that by slightly adjusting WKTU musically, Clear Channel is trying to drive Now 92.3 out of the NYC market, leaving a situation where CC controls both CHRs

I don't think Clear Channel has a more competitive signal to swap with though - I can't see them downgrading either Project 96.1 or The Bull

Having both a Rhythmic and Mainstream/Adult CHR isn't that farfetched really... here in Albany NY, WFLY is a Mainstream and WAJZ is a Rhythmic both owned by Pamal Broadcasting Co. but WFLY tries to separate themselves from WAJZ to prevent the stations from eating into each other (WFLY had an Alt lean from a few years back), and NYC has WKTU and WHTZ (the former plays more dance/rhythmic product while the latter is more rock/adult I believe) :)

I could see them downgrading Project. IMNSHO Project hasn't really delivered since they blew up 96 Rock and rolled in Buzz.

Now here's an idea: Bring back Buzz on 105.3, and blow up Project. If you insist, move Project to 105.3. Then, put WGST or Patron on 105.7. Wild gets an intown C0, Buzz goes back where it came from and to a signal more commensurate with its ratings, and WGST gets back on FM on the northside (WGST on FM is less needed ITP) or Patron gets reach from Gwinnett/Hall up towards Dalton (Roddy's big idea).

If they would increase the 97.9 signal strength, that would be great!
105.7 & 96.7 going to falter after or shall we say IF the speculation that a CHR/Rhythmatic does come to the area and it will be on 97.9? Which it seems like its going to be a station in the Rhythmatic - CHR range...

Well, what would be some names? Hot 98? Power 98? Hot 98?
Why would they call themselves "Power/Hot/99" when it's not even on the 99 dial...??
Why did they even do that for 99X when it was on 97.9? I'm sure Cumulus understood this being kind of "odd" that's why they put it back on the 99.1 dial! I'd think that was smart..wonder what took them so long to acquire..

I'd like Q100 on the 97.9 dial better but the only thing is that they would have to change the name to make it make sense and increase the signal big time...that is unlikely going to happen here in the big turn of events.

It's like Bert saying "Hey guys, Q100 is on the move.........AGAIN....this time were @ 97.9.......Q100 @ 97.9...."

THAT WOULD BE STUPID, Cumulus... So, just leave Q where it is, that is @ 99.7...

It's just weird we have little signal strength on 97.9, 99.1, and 100.5 both used by Cumulus.... should we fix this? Or continue to fix this...

Oh, Clear Channel Atlanta - dont put Wild on 94.9/96.1 --- that's San Francisco's property and their market does not need to know the mass confusion on Atlanta's market..hah

So, we'll see what format will debut on 97.9 but i'll be shocked if it's CHR... I guess Q100 sucks.
