Power 99 - music selection

I heard Gwen Stefani's 'Hollaback Girl' on Power 99 this evening. Isn't that an unusual choice for a bangin' hip-hop and r&b station?

I can somewhat understand a Gwen ft. Eve song, but a regular Gwen Stefani or No Doubt song doesn't seem to belong there. It would belong on WIOQ not WUSL, if it wasn't so overplayed.

Ever heard of "crossover," my friend?

That's what has happened here. The song got / is played to death at CHR, test scores on it are soaring, and Urban / Rhythmic sttations recognize the role it fills. You can't ignore the hits.
______________

WZMX-FM 93.7 ("Hot 93.7") of Hartford, an urban contemporary station since March of 1991, and WQHT-FM 97.1 ("Hot 97") of New York City both play it.

And that is why every hip-hop/R&B station is playing that song. Albeit ridiculously overplayed, it's a decent song--but this (bleep) is bananas!!
______________

Well, it's been played on Wired and The Beat as well.

Anymore, the format of a radio station applies to the desired audience more than it applies to the station itself. A station calling itself Urban CHR is going after what is perceived to be an Urban CHR listener. (This is all about advertising research, money, blah-blah-blah.) If whatever song--regardless of the artist or genre--tests high enough with members of that Urban CHR listener population, the station will likely play it no matter what. You gotta give the people what they want, after all.

This also explains why some Mainstream CHR's play country tunes and why straight-up AC's played that Nelly/Tim McGraw piece of shizzle. Fo nizzle!
