Propz on the info.

I'm sure Kekeluv will surface someplace soon, probably within Citadel because he has a good relationship with Judy Ellis (so I hear). Power 99 is in a tough situation, K97 is a well programmed heritage Urban. HOT has carved out a niche and has very passionate listeners that give them healthy enough TSL that it's able to overcome the signal issue.

That's GREAT news !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I can't stress it enough. The station will not survive, and I'd say they'd be better off flipping to Urban AC if anything.

MEMPHIS is not ANCHORAGE! I'm sure Steve "KeKeLuv" probably got a little scared a couple of times if he had any car-jacking attempts on him! BTW, I dated a couple of KiKi's (and KeKe's) and a MeMe too....... wondering where HE got HIS name from lol! He'll do much better in Seattle or Portland.

Besides all that mess, Citadel got ALOT of heat for hiring Steve in the first place for such an Urban market like Memphis (aka they couldn't have found a Black programmer that knew the market so they went with Steve).

The station was doomed from the start. A Rhythmic-Pop station isn't what Memphis really wants.... we can see that really the only station they really affected was Top 40 WHBQ. I can compare Power 99 to 97.1 Jamz in Atlanta. It's just NOT working!

ATL:
V103 = Heritage
Hot 107.9 = Hip Hop
97.1 Jamz = Lost

Memphis:
K97 = Heritage
Hot 107.1 = Hip Hop
Power 99 = Lost

BTW, Wendy Williams IS NO BETTER!! Personall, I actually don't like Wendy's style or attitude. Not sure what Citadel is trying to do with their station, but it's gonna lose afternoon drive even bigger now with syndication. East coast usually don't work in the South.

Not only that, but Citadel seems to like putting syndicated shows on during afternoon drive. (Or, if that's not what they like, well, it's what they did at WRBO.) Besides, 98.9 did better as smooth jazz, didn't it?

Wow TJ. Taking a lil' glee in another person's misfortunes?

Perhaps you have some personal axe to grind with Steve, and if so good luck with that. But just to clarify, although Steve (KeKeLuv) did program in Alaska, he's not from Alaska. In fact, I do believe he's from Houston and worked at KBXX. So if you wanna hate on him, which is certainly your prerogative, at least know that he's not some upper northwest native, or an eskimo, or some guy that had never seen any brown people until his plane landed in Memphis.

Things just didn't work out for him in Memphis and like always, when things don't work out, it's not any "one thing" that caused it. Meanwhile you brought up some very good points that contributed to that situation not working out as the company had envisioned. Propz to you on that.

As I see it, the main problem with Smooth Jazz on 98.9 is that it was not on a big enough stick. So, Citadel moves the tower closer and THEN DUMPS THE FORMAT!

I think it could do better now because it is strong enough in the city to get into office buildings, where it could take from RVR and protect WRBO.

I realize that WZJN was the ONLY Smooth Jazz station Citadel operated, but if it was done right, now that they can get into office buildings, it could be successful.

Your thoughts?

Good points. But since they blew up the station after moving the tower, it makes you wonder if Citadel wants to be in the Smooth Jazz business at all.
______________

Not just that... but as a Smooth Jazz, that station ran CHEAP. The nut on Power is way, way higher.

Isn't there a Noncomm jazz station here? That would cut into the market share, but it wouldn't be reflected in Arbitron. Was the format that profitable?

that would be the jazz lover 92fm--- the u of m station

This has to be the most stereotypical and statements I've seen on this board. First off, there are white programmers that can program Urban. Second off, Citadel didn't put on an Urban (or even want an Urban), they put on a RHYTHMIC! You say Citadel is wrong because they didn't hire a black guy to play hip hop. I say Citadel had their goal in mind and went for it. When mentioning Atlanta you forgot to mention The Beat that does decent, and also the VERY WHITE Star 94. Just because a market has a large black population doesn't mean that you have to do Urban or nothing at all.

Moderation notice

Um, can we be just a *tad* more racially sensitive? I don't think a statement that infers that a white PD can't possibly relate to a black audience is just a sliver away from saying a black PD can't program to a white audience.

Oversight, I'm sure but lets all remember we're in the one town you don't want to start a racial thing in. Anotherwords, think before you open mouth.

Thanks.
______________

A little insight from one of their main voice trackers :)

First, the stick move was in the works well before Citadel bought the place. That was a Barnstable move. Second, once Citadel became part of the equation, Smooth Jazz was dead as a proverbial doornail - just like Froggy was finished the day Entercom took over from Sinclair.

You guys have to remember, when a new company comes in, they've usually already done their market survey and decided what stations are staying and which ones are going before they finish the license transfer. Everyone knew there'd be a house cleaning when Citadel came into the building... the only thing that surprised me was that only TWO stations flipped... I figured Kix was going to be the only survivor. But... there's still time :)
______________

Cheap ain't the word.. but you expected anything else from fearless leader? haha.. In all fairness however, Smooth Jazz was such a passive format that it's probably the only one that made sense to VT all except 3 hours a day of.
______________

Are you suggesting 103.5 is underperforming? Are they not billing well? Are they not hitting their targets?

OK, if they flipped, what would go there?

if i recall correctly - CAGLE programmed Hot 107.1 for 3 years. he's now in atlanta doing the same...at 95.5 The Beat. he's short and white and from arkansas! definitely not 'stereo-typical'. he's done alright, don't 'cha think?

Re: Soul Classics in trouble?

I'm suggesting that before I left the building in April, there was much disappointment that the big numbers they got the first year of Issac Hayes' syndication didn't last.. and yes a bit of a hint that 103.5 might not be quite what it should be. That said, it's still viable, IF Citadel doesn't get this hairbrained idea that syndication is a good way to approach a drive time - ANY drive time. They've already prostituted, er, farmed out PM drive to the bird... Henry Nelson has done a great job with Soul Classics and I'd hate to see it go.

Classic Country. Keep the entire brand in house so nobody can come in and steal some of Kix's numbers. Do an 80s/90s Country station and nobody could ever try to resurrect Froggy 94 even under a different name. That's a great way to protect Kix's flank. But.. I'm not sure they see it.
______________
