power bills

accross the state anyone covering the high power bills? It seems to me that no one cares that people are paying 150%-200% higher electric bills now. Do we really care if we piss off the power company. Our listners are hurting, why are we doing more as broadcasters? I can't believe our electric officials here in IL are standing by...wow they all must be getting some big kick backs.

i would think there is a lot to report. if we are silent the big power companies win. I'm sure we can hear reports from people hearing sticker shock when they open their first electric bill and it's 100times higher than last month. WOW, we all need to do something.

Besides that...you can bitch and moan about it all you want. It won't change anything. Remember the high prices of gasoline?? It didn't go down because people were griping and complaining about it. And it WILL go back up.

agreed, complaining dosnt do much. Was covered toward the end of last year. Amerin IP put a big media blitz on about it.

it's not complaining. News/Talk stations should be cover the story about low income people how are they going to pay the bills now? Or elderly. That first bill was a whopper for most people. I'm not talking about complaining. The more noise we make, telling the facts. Reporting the news that affects peoples lives, and this rate incrase has hit alomst everyone. Our legislators need to stand up and help. The power companies need to held responsible. I'm not looking for complaining but radio needs to be doing what radio does best! Talk about our listners lives and what is impacting them. This is truely hurting many families...its not complaining its reporting so everyone knows the impact.

I agree that radio "should" be hammering information into people's minds, but in this day and age, how often is that happening? It's hard to be convincing when most stations are voicetracked, or better yet, jukeboxed.

The news industry is too damn busy worrying about who is gonna get Anna Nicole Smith's body than they are somebody not able to pay their bills.

That was what I was trying to say before...

Well if you had paid attention to the reports at the beginning of the year you'd know that low-income folk have the option to defer their higher electric rates. Therefore the "sticker shock" wouldn't be as bad.

It should be noted that our rates are just now on par withthose of other states. We just lucked out that the legislation froze the rates for so long, so we got spoiled. Instead of taking increases slowly we got stuck with it at once.

We can only hope that the next time we have a gnarly ice storm it doesn't take Ameren as long to get the power back on. Let's hope they do something constructive with their newfound money!
