power decrease

On the Buffalo/Niagra Falls, Rochester Discussion Boards there is a thread concerning the apparent power decrease of WWKB. Very interesting. It is very sad when a former big-time powerhouse station falls on hard times.

spent many a summer , and even winter , nights in York , Pa duirng the late 50s and early 60s "DXing" the big to p 40 stations from chicago , Ft Wayne, New York and of course WKBW in Buffalo. was it 1510, 20 or 13? can't remember, but the station was always a must tune it every night.

1520. I guess they changed the call letters when the AM was spun off from the TV.

'84-'85, I don't remember the exact year but it was when WKBW owner Capital Cities bought ABC, the radio was spun off. I don't understand why it wasn't grandfathered under duopoly rules in effect at the time, but it wasn't. I think Price Communications bought it first, now it's owned by Entercom. Current format is Progressive Talk.

I was able to pick them up here last evening and about an hour after sunrise today in the car.
Either they are back up to 50kW, or that 10K really packs a punch into Pittsburgh.

I still say if the Environmentalists are going to force me to use CFL lightbulbs, they need to take a look
at KDKA. ;D

Scott Fybush reports from 4/5/10 .A follow-up to our report two weeks ago about Buffalo's WWKB (1520) and its power levels: it appears that whatever stories were making the rounds about a power cut to 10,000 watts at the city's once-mighty AM voice were just that - stories. Reliable sources report that 'KB in fact remains at 50,000 watts, with no plans to change power levels, and we're glad to hear that.

Some day, when we are all on a "smart grid", will some bureaucrat have the authority to turn their power down if he/she feels they are using too much electricity? Or if they happen to be running some program with which he/she disagrees?

Entanglements between the Global Warming crowd and big 50kW radio stations are just beginning, I fear.

By then, "radio" will probably mean "Wi-Fi", and terrestrial radio, at least as we know it today on medium wave, will be long gone.
