Two things here...
FIRST:
I'm currently listening to KPWR Power 106 during my last day in L.A. I notice that this morning (02/19/12) they are leaning very heavily on the hip hop hits. No r&b or dance so far. Just straight hip hop, and just about every song they're playing has a certain type of edit with no intro. Most of the songs are starting right where the first lyric (or lyrics) hit. About two of them (Flo Rida "low" and Sean Paul "Tempurature") were shortened with the last verse(s) cut off (and those were the only two uptempo songs played on Power 106 since 5:55 - 9:00am. I'm wondering how much longer they'll go playing all hip hop hits and if this is something they do every Sunday.
PLUS:
I also have new news about KKFR Power 98.3 in Phoenix, Az. They've decided to bring back their Power Mix Weekends, mixing all weekend, every weekend. However, once KNRJ 101.1 The Beat receives a signal boost (becoming even stronger than Power 98.3 in central Phoenix) and flips to all current hip hop, I wonder how long rhythmic Power 98.3 will manage to survive. KZON 101.5 Jamz is already Arizona's highest rated rhythmic with rhythmic top 40 KZZP 104.7 in second place. Then there is CHR top 40 Hot 97.5 which is right around the same spot with Power 98.3 in ratings. Power 98.3 already has enough competition, and I believe that 101.1 The Beat could put the final nail in the coffin. When 101.1 gets a signal boost, they will drop their other frequencies, 92.7 and 99.3. WHAT exactly will happen with those frequencies?!!? Well, ....I'll tell later. All I know is that Power 98.3 doesn't look like they have a bright future, at least within the foreseeable future of things to come.
TIMES HAVE CHANGED:
I remember back when I would die just to come to California to hear and discover new things on LA and nearby radio stations. I'd have four radios and a bunch of cassettes ready for the noon, evening, and weekend mixshows from B100.3 to 99.1 KGGI, 102.7 KIIS F.M., Groove Radio 103.1, and more. Nowadays, I spend a lot of time with my mp3 player hooked up to my aunts sound system here. Funny how times change! I never thought there'd be a time when the LA market wouldn't be anymore exciting than the Phoenix market! Every CHR in LA pretty much all play the same things. LA no longer sounds like the international market it once sounded like, radio-wise. Lastly, KJLH still confuses me. Sometimes they're hip hop, sometimes they're r&b or gospel. They did randomly play "good feeling" by Flo Rida ft Avicii as well.
