POWER/WNCI NEW FORMAT COMING?

OK, I know there has been a lot of talk about Power 107 and WNCI lately. I have brought this up before a very long time ago. What Columbus needs is a 24-HR dance station. Example, BPM on channel 36 Sirius/81 XM. With a very high gay population here in Columbus local and national companies would advertise with the station because it is known through studies that the gay population spend money more than the average person.

When I worked for Power 107 from 2001-2004 I suggested to Paul Long (aka Paul Strong) that 107 should look at a mix of Hip-Hop/R&B/Dance format. We discussed this at a broadcast event at the Haunted Hoochie. I believe we where sitting in the Power 107 Ford Explorer while we discussed it. Paul did not seem interested about my idea at the time. He told me to do some research and give it to him for review and he changed the subject. That told me there he was not interested in such an idea.

Oh, not to change the subject but it was the same evening that a teenager came up to Paul while he was sitting in the truck and the teenager was making comments to Paul when all of the sudden Paul jumped out of the truck and started beating on the kid. A crowd formed as I pulled Paul away from the kid before he was arrested. After that time, I did some thinking about who I was working for and soon I quit Power 107 because the man that everyone likes is not whol he is. He is hot tempered and thinks he owns everything and not willing to listen to others for ideas. He just thinks for himself and not others. Another example is when I was sitting in on the morning show he lost his temper off the air with Konata and Tiffany King (no longer there). Used profanity while he was yelling at them. Didn't even care if I was there observing this. (I HAD TO SHARE THIS BECAUSE EVERYONE THINKS HIGHLY OF PAUL. HOW GOOD HE IS. NO ONE HAS SEEN HIS DARK AND HOT TEMERPED SIDE.)

Now back to the subject. I think Power should flip their format to the one I said. What do you think of that kind of format here in Columbus?

I remember listening to Paul a long time ago during the early 00's when he ended up getting kicked off the air with Konata for a boxing match that went wrong. It was between a girl and him and something went wrong (I can't remember) but Paul was suspended.

Also, last time I checked, J.D. Kunes programs Power?

Yep, J.D. is both OM and PD for Power. Same J.D. that used to be the OM at 717 E. David Rd. in Dayton before Mainline bought the station.

Hmmm, maybe he should look into my suggestion. Miami (South Beach), FL has a similar format. I think the format would be great for Columbus. WNCI teases it on the weekends. Maybe this would bring Columbus up in the market instead of just several country stations, and just one hip-hop station. ;D

WOW! I'M SHOCKED! never imaged paul strong was that barbaric!

WTF! MAN POWER 107.5 already plays dance music 24/7. power 107.5 hardly play rap/hip hop music. check their play list! most of all the music on power 107.5 is dance, pop music or music for gay folks?? So i STRONGLY DISAGREE with this idea! i think they should make it like a magic 98.9 station where they mainly play new school. but mix some old school with it. like play 5 new songs then play a flashback song! play five songs then play 2 old school songs. then repeat. we have too many commerical stations as it iz. We need a urban station for inner city and lovers of hip hop/rap!

There was a station like that in Atlanta.... 971 - it was hip-hop & r&b from the 80s 90s - NOW.... and I did like it, but it was jockless and couldn't sell... a station like that could work as a Urban AC IF it was a big market... won't happen in Columbus.

Datfirman, I beg to differ. I am sitting in a downtown high rise right now listeng to Sirius BPM Dance station and it surley does not sound like Power at all. Not even close. Try that statement again. Power is to scared to even try it. Ben there and done it. HA HA, go try though. ::)

Oh please. Everyone in his family maybe, but I doubt it. Most people who have worked with him think he's an arrogant little weenie. I'm surprised the kid didn't kick his butt.

Oh.... and the "dance and pop" you're claiming that Power plays is called Rhythmic.

can you school my black #$^ on the business phases of different music genre's. and what the difference between urban urban AC and rythmic? and what's a top 40 i'm dying to know!

Alright....

Urban: Hip-Hop & R&B w/ core artists being: Pleasure P, Lil Wayne, Melanie Fiona, Keyshia Cole, Busta Rhymes, Plies... straight hip-hop & r&b (example stations: WIZF, WBTF)

Urban AC: R&B & Classic Soul w/ NO hip-hop w/ core artists being: Robin Thicke, Mary J, Usher, Guy, Teddy Pendergrass, Raheem DeVaughn..... (example stations: WXMG, WROU)

Rhythmic: Hits & Hip-Hop (hip-hop sounding top 40) w/ core artists being: Lil Wayne, Pitbull, Leona Lewis, Mariah Carey, BEP, Beyonce, David Guetta & Akon, Justin Timberlake.... (example stations: WCKX, WDHT, WLTO, WBBM)

Power fits in the Rhythmic category. Although they do play some of the urban artists... those urban songs MUST have crossed over to Urban somewhere on the charts.

Yes... Power 1075 is Rhythmic and although one of the few Radio One rhythmics, they are indeed.

Good job defining the distinction between hip-hop, Urban AC, and pop. Different demographics call it different things, but lovejamminoldies is correct in his/her format descriptors.

Yes, WCKX plays Lady Gaga! As for that "Pop and Dance" comment, that was how the Rhythmic format was conceived back in the late 1980s, when it was a format that was based around Dance, way before the Hip-Hop saturation in the late 1990s. Even today there are still some Rhythmics that play Dance artists like Cascada and David Guetta.

I agree with you on that statement. Plus the Rhythmic format is also targeted towards a multi-cultural audience, which may explain WCKX's success in the ratings.

Completely agree with only1moore's take which is why I propose this:

You make a true Rhythmic CHR that further separates it's self from WNCI and Power so that it's done properly.

Then Power goes back to Urban and WNCI just stays WNCI and everyone's happy.

yes SIR

Well, now that WTDA has landed the format wheel on satellite-fed Classic Hits, we might as well cross them off the list of candidates.
