Powerline affecting AM directional pattern

I found this on Upper Midwest Broadcasting (Northpine.com), a power line is impacting an AM directional array.

KKLS/920 (Rapid City) tells the FCC a new power line may have caused changes to its antenna pattern and it may have to downgrade as a result. The power line is about 1/4 mile from the station's array.

I've not heard of this happening before. So if a power line goes up near a radio station the station has to make adjustments? What about an argument that essentially says I was here first?

The usual procedure is to try to detune the power line towers or posts so they don't re-radiate. This is a common issue, particularly with complex directionals in urban environments.

David, thanks for the information.

After your mention of "detune" I see what you mean about this being a common issue. Here in South Dakota an urban environment is less common. It seems a bit unfair to make the radio station pay the price of a new power line. I would have thought that the people building the power line towers would be aware of their effect on AM radio.
