The PPM ratings are obviously bringing modern rock to even more stations.
In Boston 92.9 going to the alt. sound brings them 3 modern rockers.
And of course L.A. has 3 now that 98.7 has leaned all the way over and was playing Korn and Social D this afternoon at 1PM for example.
On the scale of art and commerce, these towns' modern rockers go from Indie/WFNX (art side) to KROQ/WBCN (in between, heavily leaning on the commerce side) to KYSR&WBOS (almost pure commerce).
In LA, KROQ is getting attacked from all angles these days, including the new 100.3. Should be interesting to see how the ratings turn out, but KROQ still has ownership of most of the bands/songs in their playlist and has a unique edgy commercialized modern rock sound.
Meanwhile, markets such as Minneapolis and San Antonio continue to go without the format. IIRC San Antonio has never had a commercial alternative station.
