PPM Encoding and audio chain question

Sure, it's passing main program through the encoding box, so if programming doesn't make it to the transmitter for whatever reason, neither does the encoding.

Most stations have their encoders at the studio so if the STL fails, the encoded audio isn't making it either. Some stations have the encoding box installed at the transmitter site.

Also... Things like lossy low but rate algorithms can kill PPM as it heads to the tx site

Just to add/clarify one more point of information: Even if you installed the Nielsen encoder at the TX site, if audio fails going into the encoder, the encoding stops. Through a special monitor (that gives a tip of the hat to a David Bowie song) I've personally witnessed several conditions where the encoding process pauses: https://www.telosalliance.com/25-Seven/TVC-15-Watermark-Analyzer-Monitor

During periods of dead air or long pauses in audio.
During periods of talk.
Violin solos.

Just about all of the major commercial stations in our market have acquired an irritating, metallic edge to their audio, which I have a hunch is the result of the Voltair boxes they're all using.

Maybe I'm just looking for it now, but for all of the money these stations have invested in their audio chains and high-end audio processors, they're turning around and trashing it by using this technology, which makes much of their audio sound like it's been forced through a 50-gallon burning barrel.
