PPM predictions

PPM data is released on Nov. 5th. Any predictions? Discuss......

Just a WAG, but I think ATL's urbans will hold their own (especially the larger ones and, naturally, those with crossover appeal such as Kiss and Beat). The Latinos, not so much. I think WSB-AM may take a small hit...but then again, they may pick up some previously undiaried time to make up for it. Some of the smaller Radio One urbans may take a bigger hit--absolute or percentage--than V-103 or the Cox stations.

Any kind of "environmental"/listen-while-you-work format (AC/B98.5, WJZZ) will surely benefit. If this happens, CC will be sorely tempted to bring back an AC if they aren't already.

What will be really interesting is how ATL's 3 CHR's (Beat, Q100, and Star) fare. They might pick up some previously undiaried audience particularly among the younger set. How will this affect...well, tune in next week to find out.

I've noticed (along with my daughter) that Radio Disney has been playing a lot more CHR currents (Colbie Caillat, et al) and a lot less kiddie/novelty stuff (Weird Al, Disney showtunes like "Under The Sea", etc.) over the past year or so. Of course, a lot of this is Disney pushing Hannah/Miley and HS Musical. I wonder if 590 gets a tiny bit of share because Mom or Dad has the meter on and isn't "listening", so wasn't documenting the time before. Having meters on kids as young as 6 will also help in overall audience share.

I know that Kabrich will probably come on and tell me just how wrong I am, and I probably am. But hey--for someone not in the biz, I've learned a lot on this board by simply throwing out WAGs and my naive opinions and having some of y'all patiently critique them, and for that I am genuinely grateful.

I have a question. I was never an Arbitron candidate, nor did I recieve a diary. However, how are people actually getting PPM? Is it still random choice? What are the requirements? Can anyone call up to get a meter?

Tru Oldies will drop like a rock.

Frank Ski will be challenged.

Regular guys surge.

Beat will rise, Star and Q drop.

S & V will drop.

River drops

B98 rises

GST, Q100 and Sunny 100.1 will still be at or near the top followed by True Oldies due to its 5000 song library.

Without sounding too racist, I think that stations that cater to white males are going to do well: The River, Dave, Rock 100.5 and the sports stations. I have seen numbers in other cities and this is the trend. I have also seen Spanish stations doing well in those markets. The PPM monitoring could be a wholesale shift in the ratings, which could have GM's screaming foul or ducking for cover.

I predict that half of the board's posters will say that it's the greatest thing since sliced bread, while the other half will say the old Arbitron books were more accurate.

OK, here's the scoop. WGST--#1. Q100--#2, Project 9-6-1--#3, 105.7--#4 and 106.7--#5. Why? because all you have to do to get a PPM meter is call Arbitron and ask. If you pass the background screening test, you get one for 30 days at some ridiculous rate. I know because a friend of mine did just that. Now, maybe things have changed but, if they have, I haven't heard of it.

That being said, if somebody wants to get a PPM, the most likely choice would probably be white males (not meaning to be racist so no comments please). Why? In my eyes, they're dumb enough to think that this new piece of technology is neat. But then again, what do I know.

By the way, my friend who did this is black and loves V-103.

I believe the the River will drop because although people say they are fond of the tight playlist those same people who reallly like some of those really don't like some of those other songs that are constantly played. Leading to more channel changing than they are admitting to in their diaries.

I predict that there will be people on this board that will complain that PPM is unfair because the ratings have shrunk from the last throwaway book based on diaries.

I also predict Steak Shapiro's head will increase two hat sizes.

So Arbitron is now "renting out" PPM meters?? I'll take 10 please......

The PPM has not been kind to smooth jazz stations in other markets.
Interesting. Maybe smooth jazz previously had a lot of "arrow down the diary" or misattribution (I wonder how many people were putting down B98.5 as "Peach" in the last book). I would have thought that "involuntary listening opportunities" that often don't get logged would have pushed SJ up on the PPM.

Dunno about that...River is a pretty good "set it and forget it", inoffensive, default station...it WILL be interesting to see how many button-pushers get outed by PPM.

Can a person really do that? I thought that Arbitron conducted research and picked their own people and paid them to carry it around? If you can call up Arbitron and request a PPM, did you mean that a person pays them for one at a ridiculous rate, or they pay you to have it at a ridiculous rate?

Thank you Andrew Cuomo.

I'll actually need 100 PPM meters and 5 for my weiner dogs........

I'm sorry, weiner dogs aren't allowed to have meters, they aren't water proof (the meters, not the dogs!).

There is no truth to this whatsoever. Arbitron does not take money for meters the MRC would never allow it. If you think there is a stink with PPM now...if this was happening you would see a whole other level of outrage and it would actually involve people in the industry!

This is not even remotely true.
