PPM: WSB FINALLY #1, KISS IS THIRD, KICKS BARELY WINS COUNTRY

Here is the recap of the latest PPM, WSB has finally broken through to #1, as V drops.

Top 5:

1) WSB Radio
2) V103
3) Kiss
4) Praise
5) B98 (we'll see where they go after holiday ppm comes out)

6-10:

6) Hot
7) Q100
8- 107.5/97.5
9) Star
10) FISH

11-15:

11) Kicks
12) Bull  (cheap channel needs to figure out how to get a station higher than #12)
13) River
14) NPR 90.1
15) Project 9-6-1

16-20:

16) WiLD
17) 106.7 WYAY AGH (raised .3 of a share this month)
18) El no ratings @ 105.3 (move it to 96.1 and make the project the buzz again
19) Dave (will they be dave in the new year, CBS????)
20) FAN (has dropped .4, time for a real simulcast, Dickey!!!  Maybe on #23 down there)

21-25:

21) WGST (dropped .4, c'mon, it's not like you don't have high rated talkers)
22) ROCK 100.5
23) J93.3 (will the move to THE JOY FM help them)
24) THE ZONE
25) LA RAZA (I forgot about 'em)

26-30:

26) Journey (risen 50%, but that's not saying much!!!)
27) South 107
28) WAOK (who wants to listen to Al Sharpton, anyway?)
29) La Bonita
30) Talk 920

I've probably gone way to far down the list.  I had to Get Journey in here.  Can you believe that, out of town South 107.1 gets more ratings than 99X

And somebody on here, I think his name starts with a "K" said this would never happen.
I knew it was only a matter of time.....and with the election coming up, this might last
for awhile.

V is actually down 9+% from the last book. Something must have happened. I doubt V
listeners are flocking to WSB News.

WOW.....looks like they migrated to Kiss 104. Their newer playlist must be pulling some of
V-103 listeners tired of Hip-Hop.

Y-106 and 97.9 are both up a tad.......but will it last?

Wow. No wonder V103 discontinued the current electro and rhythmic dance from their mixes as of lately!

But then again.... none of this should be of any concern to me anymore at the moment.  ;)

Still waiting for the shoe to drop on Rock100.5, Z90Dave, and AGH.

To put it in perspective: Rock100.5 now has almost exactly twice the AQH ratings and cume as lil' sister Journey.

How strong is 96.1?? I'd rather see WILD move there (put Project on 105.7 or something) and have a single signal... It will never move up without a better signal (and the voice overs they use have got to go! the female's voice is absolutely annoying I have to change the channel every time I hear any of their sweepers).

Or Clear Channel needs to just give up and CBS needs to flip 92.9 to rhythmic CHR because Q100 needs some serious competition... this market really lacks a decent CHR station. I could see them using the "NOW" theme similar to 92.3 NOW in NYC... they flipped KRock to CHR... although top 40 seems to be more popular in NYC then here :-\

KISS 104.1's new mixture of 80s,90s and Now R&B seems to be working ratings wise. Hmm, I thought this was done to compete with MAJIC 107.5, but looks like V103 was the target. Over the last couple of months KISS 104.1's tv ads have been heavy. Now how is V103 going to strike back?

Not to put too fine a point on it but 5, 6 and 7 are all actually tied for 5th.

Maybe KISS's main target was actually Majic, but their game plan also caused them to accidentally interfere rather drastically with V103.

Not sure how great this idea is overall because the odds of another Atl. station finding a rhythmic chr programmer as good and creative as the one WiLD currently has.... well, isn't pretty high, if you base your odds on past experiences. I mean, after all, look how long it took! If WiLD was still being programmed the way it was a year ago today, then I'd be agreeing with the quoted idea as if agreeing with the quoted idea was going out of style! Not sure if having WWVA-FM on weak signals with a potential future upgrade, or blowing up WWVA-FM and risking that CBS produces a high power rhythmic chr that isn't as good as the current WWVA-FM is better.

Besides, V103 is under CBS, so I can only imagine what a CBS chr would probably sound like (if their goal was to not only protect themselves from stealing their own listeners from V103, but to also compete against the leading local chr sound) ...if you catch my drift.

On a somewhat separate note, I wonder what WGST could do to improve? Is WSB-AM programming really just so great that no one else even has a chance?

cc could flip 105.7 to talk to take on the #1 station 95.5

NO. 105.7 has a limited signal and it was WGST's FM at one time. CC will never admit they messed up WGST. 96.1 (IMHO kill the WKLS calls "The Project" is an insult to the former 96 Rock fans) with a superior in town signal is their only hope at WSB. CC will need something better than what they have on WGST now. WGST with a FM signal is going the wrong way in the 6 + ratings:

IMHO Tom Hughs ( I think I misspelled the name I am sorry) and the Kimmer on a for real market covering FM signal would severly mess with WSB. The real "weak link" would be mid day. Will Rush do well enough in the younger demo's that WSB has improved in the last couple of years?

The funny thing about V is it does play hip-hop and that's why they still win over Kiss with 25-34 years. There are more advantages to being an urban contemporary versus being an urban adult contemporary. I still don't see this trend lasting very long...

I have a feeling V-103 will bounce back because CBS will not let Cox have the upper hand on them in Atlanta and Orlando. CBS has given a way bigger pot and more programming freedom with V compared to Kiss with Cox (and their strict breaks with personalities), so I'm looking for more skewing R&B-heavy during the middays and more deep cuts on the Quiet Storm between 10pm-midnight in the next few weeks.

This may just be one ratings period, but a station can only ride the same train for so long.

Look how long it took B-98 to switch to another track. Their train was going downhill and
they saw it.

V-103 has been riding this Rap & Hip-Hop train for about 30 years now. Can it last forever?
Ironically, Kiss 104 is now sounding much like V-103 did before Hip-Hop took it over.

Hip-Hop is the core of V-103, WHTA, WWVA as well as some activity on others as well.
Kiss seems to have found a spot that is under-covered and they're running with it.
V should be very scared, because if Kiss can turn themselves into the old V-103 (which
it seems they are doing, and quite well) V could be a regular 3rd place, also ran.

You would be surprised how long a full-service urban station like V-103 can last regardless of how long they have been around. At the core, both stations are fight for the 25-34 demographic, which in this market is a huge sum of the audience. The funny thing about this demographic, which I am a part of, is we like hip-hop and R&B, contemporary and old school. Unless Kiss plans on spinning old school hip-hop in every mix and to their regular playlist, it will always play second fiddle to V-103 overall. One thing I have realized about the urban contemporary stations in major cities like V-103, KMEL, and Hot 103 Jamz (Kansas City), they have found a way to wade through the PPM system better than any Urban AC in comparable markets. It boils down to dayparting, programming to your advantage.

Most assume, V-103 would have fell off when PPM came into the market in 2009, so never underestimate the resiliency of this station. This is one month, so if it continues then we can say something.

I wonder if Herman and Newt both doing OK in the polls has an effect on WSB. Both have filled in for Bortz. Has any one figured out where the new WSB listeners came from? I sure it was not from WGST. They have not had that many listeners to lose in years!

Well, I heard WSB is having a special Herman Cain Weekend. When you hear the sound of a female moan, be the 10th caller to say, "9-9-9 and I'm feeling fine," and you win the prize pack. I'm not sure what's in the prize pack though.

Okay, ..... well, I guess I take that back.

If I were V103, I wouldn't change much of anything based on one rating book period. I'd just keep doing what I was doing as long as it was working until some SOLID and CONSISTENT PROOF showed that whatever was being done would be harmful in the long run of things.

Trying something new doesn't always look promising while it's still in the early stages.
