PPM

PPM starts soon. Anybody want to make any predictions. Who will be up? Who Will be Down?

PPM in another realm is "Parts Per Million." What about here?

Is there a reliable place to look up abbreviations and acronyms for radio?

The End will get another nice bounce with PPM, and whatever frequency pulls its head out of its ass and does Alternative will see a very nice surge of cume.

God, that sounded filthy.

The End is a favorite Doors song. (I like its "the west is the best" part.)

It is filthy, now that you mention it.

Stations that you hear in retail stores, dentists offices, etc... where passive listening occurs... will benefit. Good news for stations like My 92-5, Mix, the Buzz, the Zone. Stations that have historically benefitted from large TSL due to people filling out their diaries saying they listened all day, will do much worse under PPM. That's why in many markets the Urban and Hispanic stations have taken a hit. I would guess both the Bomb and KSFM will go down. Mainstream Top 40 and Classic Rock seem to do well with the PPM, good news for the End and the Eagle. Smooth Jazz does poorly with the PPM, but few of those stations were as strong as KSSJ going into the PPM so I think they'll be ok.

What about Active Rock like KRXQ or Country like KNCI (and KNTY)? And how about the AMers like KFBK, KSTE, KHTK and KCTC?

KRXQ will probably stay about where they are now. The country stations will likely take a little bit of a hit (you don't hear as many country stations in the retail/office places I mentioned above, which is why the AC-based stations will do better)... but not as badly as the AM stations will... most AM sticks would be better off just shutting down their transmitters unless there's a major news story. Even traditionally strong news stations take a hit under the PPM, let alone the weaker performing talkers that flounder under the diary system.

Tell that to Rush Limbaugh. His numbers are just as huge with PPM in most markets.

Obviously Rush is going to be an exception to the rule, especially with a Democratic administration and Congress. But look at the numbers the rest of the day on his affiliates. AM radio is pretty much dead, especially to anyone under the age of 40.

Well, having looked at the Spring '09 I noticed KSFM won't have any problem adjusting to the PPMs once they are in place in Sacramento. However, one get the feeling that KBMB is going to have a rough time. As for KDND, probably so-so but since PPMs tend to favor Top 40/CHRs they might benefit anyway.

Smooth Jazz KSSJ-94.7 did well, but I wonder how well they will do the the PPM?

When PPM first came on the scene everyone thought they had to go AC to win in the ratings. That's not the case.
AM Talkers are holding their own. KFBK should remain #1 with Rush and KSTE will also remain strong with their
talk line up. In Detroit, under PPM, an FM sports station came in #1. The talk format is the format of the future and
don't be surprised to see a Sacramento FM go talk shortly.

Which brings us to a question: Who'll flip to FM Talk, even in Sacramento?

Unless CC is prepared to switch one of their FM's, I just can't see who would currently make that plunge as long as CC has all of the Top Rated Syndicated Talk Shows unless someone raids KFBK or KSTE of their syndicated talk or even some of their Top Local Talent? There is not much Syndicated Talk Available that KFBK, KSTE or even KTKZ doesn't have, or at least the kind that would generate ratings?

Good points. Now that KHTK is beatable, how about Entercom stepping up finally and doing something with an FM Sports
station. The former KWOD is going no where. ESPN programming couldn't carry an FM but a combo of great local and
syndicated could. FM Sports is growing fast and doing very well with PPM. The Kings would likely move for the right deal.

That's a curious observation. If their talkers are so attractive, why aren't people under 40 listening? Someone here used age 40 as a benchmark, so let's go with that. You're talking about content. People who claim the under-40 crowd won't listen to AM radio even if the content is good --"top rated," even. If that's true, why wouldn't an FM talk station work with a battery of other syndicated talkers, or heaven forbid, local talkers? If they're on FM would it matter to the under 40 crowd as long as it's not an AM signal? And if you had the choice between the long term equity of the under 40 demos or the aging out-of-the money demos listening to AM, which would you prefer to sell? Or buy?

Funny how the average age for network and cable news is 60 years old. Why doesn't tv have a hard time selling those demos? Hummm...
