PPMs Jan 2019

KRWM is winning the Adult Contemporary battle this month. 4.8 compared to KSWD's 3.8, nowhere near the 5.0 they had in November! Is KRWM 'leaning softer' helping their game so far? Stay tuned...
Also nice to see 107.7 the End in 6th place, and The Jet is tied with KRWM. 98.9 The Bull still nowhere near The Wolf in the ratings fight, nor is 106.1.
And 104.5 KLSW K-Love...N/A. LOL!!! Guess we know where most of the CCM listeners are - hint hint, it's not owned by EMF!

Since January ratings started on the 3rd the Warm bounce could be residual all-Christmas listeners sampling the music adjustments. Let's see what happens this month.
As for the Bull - start the format change countdown Mar. 1 if they don't improve.

Rather doubt KLSW went from a 1.1 to a zero. More likely they chose not to subscribe and/or had encoding issues...someone with more knowledge on how these beauty contest numbers are published will be able to explain the "N/A" better than me.

KLSW is apparently not subscribed for January.

EMF buys Nielsen very selectively.

Most stations have redundancy on encoders, and in any event the devices notify in the event of failure.

"N/A" is apparently inserted by some of the publication that show Nielsen numbers, but does not come from Nielsen. You'd have to ask the one you use what the designation means. All Access does not use "N/A" and it seems that they just does not show unsubscribed stations, even if they previously did subscribe.

Assuming KLSW stays unsubscribed for four consecutive books, they will disappear from Radio Online. I always assumed it meant that the station either didn't subscribe or didn't have enough meters listening to show up. What's odd is that I've also seen stations that show N/A for one month, but when you look at the next month, it's as if nothing ever happened. As Radio Online shows the past four books, here's what that would look like. In January, a station might show 4.4, 4.3, 4.4, N/A. In February, it might show 4.3, 4.4, 4.4, 4.5.

I am surprised they subscribe at all. There really are two flavors of non-comm. EMF is the second kind- they rely entirely on a donation model. If the donations meet the needs, then all is good. If not, you have to tweak something. I guess the occasional book would act as a market specific diagnostic tool, nothing more.

The "other" kind of non-comm would be the KUOW model. Combo of donation and underwriting. Those underwriting dollars are at least a little easier to pry when you can show some gaudy numbers. So it makes sense for them to subscribe every time.

Statistically it's very useful to get this kind of information every once in a while. It allows management to assess the percentage of listeners who actually donate. The average for NPR stations is around 7%. I'd expect it to be much higher for EMF, given they have the fear of God on their side. If a particular station is running below the national average, I'd expect the company to seek a solution.

EMF is always going to have a problem in Seattle. First, 7,100 watts only goes so far in these hills. Second, the CCM format was invented at KCMS. And most of their listeners stay loyal.

Reason for EMF in Seattle? Just look to a famous song by The O'Jays:
'Money money money money....moneeeyyy!' That's why they are also buying out a famous FM station in New York, WPLJ-95.5! Not to mention WRQX-107.3 in DC was sold to EMF recently.

That and Mission. The other M word. EMF isn't necessarily seeking to be the #1 CCM station in Seattle. The goal is to get the message out. Where they end up in the competition is up to a "higher authority."

But here's the problem with that: What "mission"? We're a contacted people and have been since KBIQ flipped to KCMS.

We've already got the wheel. And thanks for the fire. But seriously, we're all good out here...

I'd change "buying out a famous FM station in New York..." for "buying a once famous FM station in New York".

WPLJ has been a DSW for more than half a decade ("Dead Station Walking").

If you notice in the OP, KCMS has a 2.8 share, which means there is still 97.2% of the population still available for conversion.

The folks at EMF feel they have a distinctive brand that might have more success than KCMS. All they need is the chance to be heard.

Everyone could get their NPR news from KUOW but some people just prefer KNKX.

More like 91%. They cume over 300,000.

One could argue money is the reason for any station in Seattle -- non-comm's included. They need it to operate, they need it to pay staff.

They're buying the five stations in Eastern markets because the price was right, and they wanted to reach those markets. I suppose it's a good sell job for more donations, but from what I've read, EMF is fairly efficient with budgeting their money for operations. I've never looked at their mission statement but I'd bet that 'winning souls for Christ' is probably in there somewhere, as it is in many Christian organizations.

We're a "contacted people" that has had an influx of people since 1985 that has doubled the population of the area, including many people from other areas of the world. In Christian parlance, that can be a 'mission field'.
