WPOI is down. FLZ is up. Mix is up. Looks like WWRM going softer and older is working?

Any thoughts?

WWRM's 80s & 90s "Gold" must be working. Although I would be one of the ones preferring to hear a little more variety than Boyz II Men's "I'll Make Love To You" & Lisa Loeb's "Stay" shuffled in different order each day and basically Top 40's most popular non hip-hop recurrents (I don't hear new songs), ratings seem to be on the up and up.

Mix's music sounds a hundred times more focused than it did 12 months ago, with the removal of endless stiffs and trainwreck segues that plagued their playlist. I'm not surprised at all that it's manifesting in ratings improvement.

As for FLZ vs. Hot, I'd be lying if I said I was certain why FLZ won this particular period, although it's just one monthly. Both stations sound really good, although as I opined in another thread, FLZ's music and presentation are far more in line with my personal preference. When I was in Tampa last month, I noticed that FLZ seemed to be playing a few more recurrents than they had in the past; not an overwhelming amount, but perhaps that conservatism paid off for them. It's also possible that FLZ is better equipped, given its straight-ahead mainstream playlist versus Hot's rhythmic emphasis, for Top 40's recent swing towards alternative and HAC-friendly Pop. Come to think of it, the music cycle might have helped Mix as well.

I've heard songs from Mumford and Sons, Of Monsters and Men, fun, and other pop skewing alternative rock on FLZ and Mix. All recent award winning bands and artists that undoubtedly have helped stations like FLZ and Mix. Not sure how many of these Hot plays but probably not much... or at least original versions.

Original versions as opposed to what? I'm not sure I follow.

God-awful dance remixes.

Thanks Parttimer. That's exactly what I meant. FLZ sounds like a straight on top 40 now... like a CHR from the 80's or 90's with a good mix of everything. Hot leans rhythmic and in my opinion has impacted Wild 94.1 way more over the past year or so than FLZ.

I listened to FLZ driving home from St Pete to Tampa Monday night, 11 Pm-ish. I didn't intend to actually listen to it, usually I listen to sports talk from one of our local stations, but I gathered in a quick 30 minute sample that they play the audio versions of whatever is the top 20 on Youtube. I didn't want to like it, not sure if I did like it, but the truth is I didn't change the station for about 40 minutes, and I guess that is what the station is looking for, right?

It's called Top-40 radio. Been around for almost 60 years now. Few stations do it as well as FLZ has over most of its history.
