Pre-Christmas DX -- KLVI heard in Jamaica

Guest
I know its been more than a month, but I have been meaning to post that I picked up 560 KLVI the week before Christmas on my nearly 20 year old Sony Walkman clear as a local one night. I was trying to find Jamaican AM stations (staying in Negril, Jamaica) but they appeared to be non-existent at that hour. I did tune in several of the Radio Reloj stations from Cuba, playing a constant time clock signal with talk over it. I thought I must have pulled in one of the Miami stations when I heared the news at the top of the hour, and then I was surprised when I heard the commerical for Delta Downs and other Golden Triangle Commericals. I did not pick up any other American station at the time...and no Jamaican stations either (my research shows that Jamaica only has a few AM stations and most of them, if not all, just rebroadcast FM stations, anyway).

And I am posting this on the Houston board, even though KLVI is a Beaumont station, because
1. I live in Houston
2. KLVI comes in just fine most of the time in Houston
3. The Houston Chronicle even includes KLVI in the listing of local radio stations.

(As an aside, is there any other market that as as many of its market's licensed signals hijacked for redirection to another market as Beaumont/Pt. Arthur/Orange have signals redirected towards Houston?) Maybe this board should just become the Houston/Golden Triangle Board since there is so much overlap in the stations....)

The skip that some of these AM stations have is insane I can pick up a fuzzy signal of KMOX out of St Louis on a nighly basis either in my truck of on my walkman. There are some times I get WSM Nashville on 650 AM. Ten years ago when I was a sophomore in high school, I was listening to an Atlanta Hawks basketball game on my radio in my bedroom on there flagship station 750AM with no bleedover from KTRH. Geeze, Has it really been that long???

After Hurricane Rita, as I was up at Toledo Bend for over a week without power, I listened to the Houston Astros and St. Louis Cardinals game on KMOX. I couldn't pick up KTRH at all. Irony of ironies.

Of course, growing up in Tulsa I would listen to John "Records" Landecker on WLS with no problems whatsoever...

If I'm thinking of the correct place, Toledo Bend is right behind KTRH's main null. Which means you will hear pretty much nothing if you're any distance from the tower. Unbelievable considering the 200K signal it puts over the city at night.

Ehhh back in the 70s while working at KLVI, we were heard in New Zealand....at 1KW at night while the directional array was being rebuilt..
North Texas has a lot of northern rimshots from other markets aimed at DFW...
probably more than Houston..

" K L V I.......dial 56" as one of the OLD jingles from the 70s went :)

At night you can get on Hwy 90 west of Dayton, look at the towers! and drive right through the deep null to the NNE and NOT hear KTRH at all...and yes you can SEE the towers at that spot..(one of the monitor points on the array according to Errol Coker, former CE there)

That would be the null to protect the 740 in Toronto.

Another such example is in Amarillo. About the point where Hwy 287 joins with I-40 (east of town) you can see the KIXZ 940 towers, but not hear a thing at night--you are in their null to protect the 940 in Des Moines.

Of course, in both cases it means the array is properly phased. Tip your hat to the CE as you drive by.

That's the truth. And in both cases, it's amazing. I don't know that I've ever personally encountered a null that deep.
How far were you from the towers, CW, when you could not hear 740? Are we talking 10 miles or just a few? I've been a part of a few KTRH signal discussions on here but I've never gotten a real good feel for exactly how deep that null is at night. I've heard scant traces of KTRH in Dallas - not at all strong, indeed they were very weak - but that's to the north-northwest.
