PRECURSOR TO ipod?

Can someone please help me remember the name of the subscription service that would download programming from the internet, to be carried via a handheld unit? I seem to remember the unit looking sort of like a clunky cell phone. The unit itself might have been RCA or Motorolla. Programming was mostly talk, like maybe Rush or Bloomberg. I think there was a monthly fee which included use of the portable unit - it wasn't a widely-sold retail item like at Best Buy or Walmart - it obviously never had much of an impact.

Any ideas? I didn't dream this, did I?

The device may have been the Rio PMP300, but then again I'm not sure. That would have come out in oh 1999 or so, and really there is nothing earlier than that.
