PRECURSOR TO ipod?

Can someone please help me remember the name of the subscription service that would download programming from the internet, to be carried via a handheld unit? I seem to remember the unit looking sort of like a clunky cell phone. The unit itself might have been RCA or Motorolla. Programming was mostly talk, like maybe Rush or Bloomberg. I think there was a monthly fee which included use of the portable unit - it wasn't a widely-sold retail item like at Best Buy or Walmart - it obviously never had much of an impact.

Any ideas? I didn't dream this, did I?

Only thing I remember was a radio/tape recorder that recorded standard audio compact cassettes at slow speed so you could fit all 3 hours of Rush on one side of a C90 (or maybe it was both sides with auto-reverse)...that was for those who couldn't figure out how to use a VCR to do the same thing or wanted something more portable. It might have had a timer too for delayed recording (again, ditto about the VCR)

There are also apps like Total Recorder that can do the same with streaming audio, so you can make your own podcasts.

I think there's an episode of Beavis & Butthead where the boys try to play 8-track tapes in a VHS player. You can start there.
