Predicting Future Radio Trends, New York And Iceland:

Radio follows a very precise evolutionary pattern. I was reading somewhere a long time ago, I forget where, about radio in Iceland. I was told you could predict the outcome of all of the radio stations in any major city by following trends in Iceland. Being so tiny, Iceland serves as a scale model for the radio community. Years ago competition became so fierce that radio stations all gradually sounded the same. Then critical mass set in and the whole thing imploded. The problem was advertising dollars were spread out too thin between too many stations. In the end it created a split and more splits in format. Now Iceland has many specialized formats based on ethnic, age and cult formats. The stations had to find that specific group of loyal listeners and the advertisers that could only cater to that one audience. Radio stations in New Jersey have learned the hard way to do this, with only a few ignorant PDs ignoring this trend. Like I said it is an evolutionary pattern that will always have the same result. I should be getting paid big bucks for this advice. I believe you get out of this board what you put in. Also I want radio to keep sane during the current economic depression (inflation is hiding the reality of it all). Don’t always think you have a problem with your station if revenue doesn’t come in. The money is out there. I want more listeners overall to stay with radio, whatever the station they listen to. In any case, I hope you can understand how this trend works. As for me, I am having fun listening to all the competition on the air!
