PREDICTION: WTKK/ GREATER MEDIA WILL NOT WAIT FOR HOWIE CARR.

C

Casablanca

With WTKK's ratings dropping like a rock, I predict that they will not wait for Howie Carr to exhaust the court appeal system. They cannot afford to wait.

That brings up Don Imus. I know WTKK said they would wait for Howie but once they realize their date has stood them up they will dry their corporate tears and move on...to Imus in The Morning. Look for Mike Barnicle to resurface as well. Note, 96.9's ratings started to fall when Barnicle and Company left and Michael Graham took over morning drive.

One cannot live on Graham Crackers alone. ;)

We may know soon enough what will happen, depending on the appeal to a higher court etc.

by the way in today's Globe:
http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2007/10/17/judge_carr_has_to_stay_at_wrko/

they talk about yesterday's decision and also say that Howie may have to pay back some damages
(lost ad money?--WRKO couldn't say exactly how many sponsors have fled WRKO with Howie off
air/poss. moving)

and I had to laugh:
>>"Talk radio is a different animal," Fishkin said. A host disgruntled with the station "might make for good radio. It's about getting the viewer interested

Viewer? It's radio, pal :)

And:
>>in the world of talk radio, WRKO could see its ratings jump if Carr liberally criticized that station while on the air.

Funny to see "liberal" and Carr in same sentence!

If Howie is smart, he will "fall" on the first day back so he can go out on disability.

Time to learn from the hacks! ;D

I disagree this time, Casablanca. In the very bad state that radio is in today they would rather "wait" for a bird in the hand than go seek out new, vibrant talent and get "two in the bush" (no political pun intended).

The problem with radio is that it plays conservatively (not the political conservative ((though that too)) but the financial conservative).

They have resources, so like the Architect in "The Matrix" they are willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater knowing they can draw from other corporate funds to stay alive until they can try to be a "power" player again. RKO can sink for 5 years, Entercom has enough staying power as a corporation that they can withstand the bad moves.

Same with 96.9

That's why that aspect of the Telecommunications Act really destroyed radio as we knew it. And back then it wasn't anything to write home about. Now it has all but evaporated.
