Just past the halfway post...is it too early to start gazing into the Ol' Crystal Ball?.......

================================================================

January - In a major announcement which shakes-up the market, and is intended to revive their sagging fortunes, KDKA-AM hires a new PD and a rolls out a complete retooling of their schedule.

New Program Director Shecky Bertlesman, long-time manager of WIMP-AM in Coudersport, says that CBS is "definitely making a statement here and is showing they are committed to putting this station back on top". As evidence of their commitment he cites "their very strong efforts to recruit me away from my lucrative gig at Starbucks". He says that CBS brass have assured him that they are "highly enthusiastic about the future of AM radio".

The biggest headlines are grabbed by the news that Shumway, Richert & Co. are all let go in a clean-sweep of the morning show. It is announced that the new KD morning show will feature the team of Frankie Day and Dr. James Winer. Mark Madden is brought over from WXDX to handle sports, with former Channel 11 anchorwoman Beverly Byer returning to town as news anchor. Hal the Talking Computer is brought over from KIH-35 to do weather, with Sheldon "Crash" Murdoch, the hang-gliding traffic reporter, being brought in from KOWZ-FM in Kansas City. He will make his reports by diving off the KD Traffic Tower located high atop the US Steel Building.

Mid-days will be held down by Marty Griffin, but in a new, entirely re-formatted show. He will now be hosting a radio version of the formerly popular NBC-TV game show "Fear Factor". This will run until 1PM, at which time KD will go to an expanded afternoon newscast, "300 to 6". Early evenings, Quinn and Rose make the move over from 104.7 to host a revival of "Party Line". 10PM to 2AM will feature a time-shifted rebroadcast of the syndicated Alex Jones Show, with the overnight hours filled by a simulcast of WWV.

Weekends find Rob Pratte holding down 20 out of 48 broadcast hours by hosting the new Hefren-Tillotsen Ask The Veternarian/Realtor/Pharmacist/Gardener/Mechanic/Accountant/Adjuster/Barista/Phlebotomist/Postman/Chiropractor/Busboy/Sex Therapist Show. Pratte's yeoman shift is broken up for some church service broadcasts on Sunday mornings.
Saturday evenings find a new syndicated talk show intended to compete with the established Cigar Dave Program. This fresher, hipper version is hosted by Tommy Chong. Sunday evenings are filled by Tradio, hosted by Father Ron Lengwin. All evening programming is subject to pre-emption during summer months to carry Washington Wild Things baseball.

February - Arrrrrrghh, there be Pirates! A DX-er in Terre Haute, Indiana, alerts Pittsburgh listeners via the Radio Info message boards that a station claiming to be WZUM has been popping-up sporadically on 1590. The station is playing jazz, and appears to be the work of some former WDUQ fans who have gone over to the dark side. The station is rumored to be operating out of a 1994 Chevrolet van, and in addition to WZUM it has ID'd itself at various times as "DUQ Redux" and "Radio Free Wilmerding". This development leads to the posting of a new WZUM thread on Radio Info which quickly grows to 37 pages.

WKFB announces that Porky Chedwick is coming back to town to take over the 55 hours of weekly air time that were left vacant when Frankie Day made the switch over to KDKA. Since January 1 the station, having lost both Frankie Day and Dr. Winer, had been playing a loop directing listeners to tune down to 1250 for Radio Disney. Angry letters and internet postings immediately begin bombarding the 94-year old broadcast veteran, saying “you’re no Frankie Day!” But things settle down after Frankie gives Porky an enthusiastic thumbs-up during a joint appearance on a WQED pledge drive.

March - The new KD Morning Show experiences its first serious hiccup during a weather segment, when Hal the Talking Computer encounters a Microsoft Vista error and begins repeating "My mind is going, I can feel it" over and over again. Quickly reacting to make lemons out of lemonade, Shecky Bertlesman recuts audio of the incident into a clever new promo for The Alex Jones Show.

WKHB survives their near-death experience after Dr. Winer's defection to KDKA cuts their billing by 93%, and makes a splash when they turn on their new 94.1 signal in Pittsburgh. They immediately make a dent in the PPM's during evening hours. It turns out people will actually listen to uninterrupted, commercial-free music on the radio. Who knew?

April - Industry pros all over town are set abuzz by the surprise construction permit filing by WAMO 100. They file in mid-April for permission to go to 62 watts from a tethered dirigible 4000 feet above Point Breeze. The filing is challenged by Clear Channel on grounds that it is "silly", and by Canadian authorities, over fears of potential interference with CBKA-FM in Fond du Lac, Saskatchewan.

Struggling and desperate for cash, WLFP lists itself for sale on Ebay. The winning bid comes from a nineteen year old fast-food worker in Grinnell, Iowa, who edges out Essential Public Media in the last two minutes. But the deal falls through after he fails to make a timely deposit into his PayPal account. Perturbed, WLFP ownership says that they are “disappointed, and are going to be leaving some really, really negative feedback”.

Initial ratings on the new lineup at KDKA are not at all encouraging. Undaunted, Shecky Bertlesman says that he is unconcerned by the low numbers, giving his theory that the lackluster performance is “the result of a whole lot of people who are lying into their PPMs”

May - The ongoing trend of universities getting out of the station ownership business continues when the University of Pittsburgh announces plans to sell WPTS to Essential Public Media. Local public radio fans react with resignation, but are comforted by the fact that "at least this keeps 92.1 out of the hands of those greedy capitalist pig-dogs over at WKZV". The new schedule for WPTS appears to be a mix of lectures from the Economics department at Bucknell, and live coverage of debates in the Sri Lankan Parliament. When asked about the loss of this student activity, Pitt officials point out that “they will still have the internet, or can just stick the wire from the old closed-carrier system out the window".

Demolition work on the Civic Arena comes to a temporary halt as FCC SWAT teams descend upon the site in search of the elusive pirate WZUM. The raid fails as the Chevy van is nowhere to be found. An FCC spokesman later explains that they were following up on an anonymous tip posted on the Radio Info message boards that “the station was being operated by one Chuckles Brinkman, with a home address of 66 Mario Lemieux Place”. Undeterred the FCC moves on to follow-up on their next lead at 600 Stadium Circle.

June - Media Matters files a complaint with the FCC, claiming that Quinn and Rose will not put liberal callers on the air. The complaint is quickly dismissed after Shecky Bertlesman responds in a filing that the format of Party Line does not allow any callers to be put on the air. Media Matters then turns their attention to Marty Griffin, who allegedly made a liberal contestant drink a quart of sixteen-month old chocolate milk on Radio Fear Factor.

WLFP is sold to Ron Morris for $250, having outbid Essential Public Media by $16.41. Morris announces his plans are to connect the station's transmitter to his cell phone so that he can verbally tweet his stream-of-consciousness entrepreneurial thoughts to his radio audience 24/7.

A major hole opens in KD’s schedule when the syndicator pulls the plug on their Saturday night show after Tommy Chong is once again accused of selling bongs on the internet. Rob Pratte steps in and picks-up a little bit of OT by spinning some records, with the All-New Moldy Oldie Golden Gassers, Sponsored by Range Resources.

July – WAOB actually garners some national press attention, as well as more than ten actual listeners, during an incident over the July 4 holiday. Brother Richard McSlursky barricades himself in the studio during his airshift and proceeds to play the Gregorian Chant track “Take Is Officium Quod Fartum Is” over and over for 47 hours in a row. When Greensburg police finally break the door down and arrest him he is overheard shouting that he “was not going to read one more of those damned papal encyclicals” and that the station should consider going all-disco. Widespread speculation in the P-G and on message boards is that it “was some kind of a stunt”, and perhaps a prelude to the station going Lutheran.

Hal the Talking Computer announces suddenly that he is leaving the KD morning show because management had refused to give him schedule flexibility to deal with family issues. Bertlesman’s plans to replace him are scuttled when he learns that Verizon had disconnected 936-1212 several years ago. The station is rumored to be in negotiations with the former automation system from 96 KX.

August - Barely half a year out of the gate, the new KD broadcast lineup is thrown for a loop by news from Washington that WWV is changing formats on September 1 and going Sports Talk. Not only does this mean KD loses their overnight simulcast, but also that morning show sports anchor Mark Madden is lured away to host WWV's morning drive show. KD seems on the verge of announcing former Penguin Billy Guerin as Madden's replacement, but Guerin backs out at the last moment after an intervention staged by Rocky Bleier and Kurt Angle. Bertlesman announces a city-wide talent search for Madden's replacement will be held at the Buffalo Wild Wings in Monroeville. KD switches their overnight slot to a simulcast of Radio Albania.

The Vinnie and Cook show becomes unusually exciting one morning when an FCC SWAT team rappels down from helicopters over Foster Plaza and bursts into the studio. The episode is the result of yet another false tip on the whereabouts of the elusive WZUM. After a thorough search of the utility closet where Rob Pratte has been living they pack up move on. It is learned that the FCC has also established road blocks and is searching every Chevy van going in or out of Wilmerding.

September - Wherever Marty Griffin goes, trouble follows. Controversy again finds the brash KD radio personality when a minister from Spring Hill dies suddenly after being challenged by Griffin to eat eleven Primanti Brothers sandwiches containing scorpions on his Radio Fear Factor. KD allows Griffin to remain on the air after he issues a statement saying that he is "sorry, and will try not to let it happen again". Primanti Brothers briefly toys with the idea of adding a Marty Griffin Scorpion Sandwich to their menu, but then quickly drops the idea.

After severe late summer storms hit the area, KDKA-AM is off the air for a couple of days due to damage at their transmitter site. In an ironic twist, the two days of silence actually cause their ratings to go up. Shecky Bertlesman later releases a statement saying that the station “was observing an extended moment of silence in memory of our late traffic reporter Crash Murdoch”. The message boards are rife with charges that Bertlesman actually stole the idea from WAOB.

October - "DUQ Redux" comes to a sudden end as FCC SWAT teams descend upon the 1994 Chevy Van, which, ironically, is parked in the parking lot of the former Pietro's Pizza on Banksville Road. Four local jazz fans are hauled away in cuffs to face Federal charges of impersonating a radio station. Essential Public Media puts in an offer on the van. The WZUM thread grows to 109 pages.

The FBI opens an investigation into a possible Payola scandal involving KDKA-AM and 93.7 The Fan. The investigation is triggered by numerous complaints from customers of a prominent auto repair chain who all find that when they pick-up their cars all of the presets have been changed to 1020 and 93.7. A statement issued by the chain calls the complaints “a coincidence”, while Shecky Bertlesman issues a strong denial of any wrongdoing from the Meineke Car Care Studios.

November - Disney makes more waves in the local market when they turn-down an offer from Essential Public Media to buy WDDZ. The offer consists of two hundred dollars cash, a hundred and eighty bucks in Rivers Casino vouchers, nine dozen gently used carts, and a board-op to be named later. Disney then announces that they have lost $67.5 million on WDDZ in the past year, due to the royalty costs associated with playing Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez records. They are therefore making a format change. Beginning January 1 the station will now simulcast WWVH. This will not only reduce operating costs, but it is hoped they will also be able to pick up some of the overnight audience that had left KDKA. Bob Smizik breaks this story in his P-G blog and goes on to write about it for thirty-nine days in a row.

Mark Madden is once again the subject of controversy when he is fired from his morning drive gig at WWV after just two months. Madden had taken a call on-air about President Obama’s college football bowl picks, during which he said that for taking Ball State over Idaho in the Humanitarian Bowl, President Obama was “a d*ck”. WWV management issued a statement saying that Madden’s contract had been terminated and that “we have a zero-tolerance policy regarding any acts of plagiarism by our staff”. Immediately rumors start circulating that Madden is working on a deal to come back to the ‘burgh. He is rumored to be in talks with WAOB about taking over Brother McSlursky’s slot as host of The Angelus Hour.

December - Rumors of turmoil and strife at KD continue to sweep through town, as the morning show PPM drops below WMNY into a virtual dead-heat with WAOB. In a heated four-hour meeting which was witnessed by many passers-by through the plate glass windows on the third floor at Foster Plaza, Bertlesman reportedly slams his fist on the table and tells Dr. Winer in no uncertain terms to "lay-off the lengthy discussions about bowel movements, and knock it off with the Beltzhoover jokes!" CBS is rumored to be greatly displeased with Bertlesman's performance and looking for a replacement. These same rumors state the leading candidate to be Clint Hurdle. KD is also rumored to be looking at adding some Gregorian Chant into the mix by relaunching the All-New REALLY Moldy Oldie Golden Gassers, Sponsored by Taco Bell. Only the suddenly surging ratings of the Radio Fear Factor appear to be holding things together at this point. Media Matters urges Attorney General Eric Holder to charge KDKA with impersonating a radio station. Essential Public Media enters an opening bid of $57.69 and two cases of farkleberries.

I predict that on Tuesday July 26 2011 someone who obviously doesn't have a job in radio will waste their and oursby posting a long, dumb, unfunny post about nothing important! Yawn....

Hahaha wow.
The Catholic radio station will not survive 2012, kinda like... well nevermind.
104.7 has huge ratings in the fourth quarter because of election stuff, and may be a pirate play-off run assuming they don't go to The Fan.

FreddyE1977 well done... quite funny and for some strange reason some of it even seems plausible... gotta love those WZUM pirates...

One thing was certainly nailed correctly.

Nothing will change at DVE.

Well, he didn't cover the October firings that happen yearly at CC. Perhaps this is the year CC realizes they're paying overscale for an overnight jock. Or, that their morning show needs to be whittled down.

Of course, I'm talking about DVE. All the other stations have been hacked over several times. Surely, they'll realize they're overpaying some people for the little job they do. ;)
