Predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany Radio in 2008

I guess we will start a thread about your predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany radio for 2008. Is there going to be a change coming to the airwaves to 2008, here is my prediction:

1. Is Clear Channel Hudson Valley will all be selling off their stations to different owners?
2. Is WBPM should move the calls back to 94.3 and bring back top 40 as the long awaited "B94" like the one in Pittsburgh?
3. Is 92.9 should bring back the WRKW calls as "Quality Rock"?
4. Is Hudson Valley going to have a "Greatest Hits" format like CBS-FM did?
5. Is WCTW should bring back "The Cat" at 98.5 instead of this terrible "Lite-FM"?

Any predictions of what's coming to HV radio in 2008?

My thoughts on what I would like to see rather then predictions being that I moved out of the Hudson Valley region a few years ago. I'll list my thought on what would be good moves that I think would work in the Hudson Valley. The actual situations on format change probably may not hold true depending on ownership's ideas and financial situations.

1-920 WGHQ MOR Music like they played in the early 1980s with Mike Lawrence, etc.

2- 950 WHVW All Sports

3-1110 WTBQ Dialog 1110 somewhat like WMCA's Talk format debuted in around 1970

4-1220 WGNY Five Towns Radio- Oldies with emphasize on local radio, v-reverb echo sounding like the old Music Radio WABC

5-1260 WBNR Bring back the Sound of the Valley format with simulcast of their sister station WSPK- Get Larry Wells to return to the station as PD.

6-1340 WALL Since the station was rated best over all station next to WABC back in the 1960s & 1970s, why not duplicate the format today ? that's a no brainier...

7-1450 WKIP Sounds like the Hudson Valley would be a good move.

8-1490 WKNY R&B Oldies

9-92.1 WRNQ-simulcast with WKIP

10-94.3 WBPM agree on B-94.3 format but use call letters WBPM as they did back in the 1970s

11-101.5 WPDH Classic Rock

12-102.3 WSUS Town & Country radio

13-WSPK see WBNR simulcast ...

14-WRWD The Hudson Valley's New 1970s radio station with old vintage radio commercials for todays products, vintage jingles, etc. Can this be done by some radio PD's imagination ?

the only good question on here. It should be interesting to see how this plays out. Like the Twins with Santana, no one really seems to be biting.
2. Is WBPM should move the calls back to 94.3 and bring back top 40 as the long awaited "B94" like the one in Pittsburgh?
no. not happening.
3. Is 92.9 should bring back the WRKW calls as "Quality Rock"?
no, prob wont happen in 08. Pamal seems content with 92.9 right now.
4. Is Hudson Valley going to have a "Greatest Hits" format like CBS-FM did?
not any time soon. I dont think anyone would flip. 105.7 in OC is playing CBSFM and you already have 1220 WGNY
5. Is WCTW should bring back "The Cat" at 98.5 instead of this terrible "Lite-FM"?
ummmm, no.

WRNQ or WBWZ go full European dance!!! I kid I kid.

Perhaps Magic 100.9 WKLI will play Christmas music all year round. Magic 100.9 is still playing Christmas music after December 25 has passed. If Magic 100.9 succeeds with All Christmas All Year Round, that format can be spread to other cities across the country.

Why not ? I can dream can't I ? After all ever since late 1977 when disco first took over the airwaves causing radio formats changes to pop up for new brigher ideas which shown no vintage results. Besides all the stations mentioned in my thread losing out to the so called improved formats let's look at NYC stations that have lost great the battle with radio station format changes over the years...

1 WMCA 570 The Good Guys

2-WNBC 660 Music

3-WABC 770 Music Radio

4-WNEW 1130 Music

5-WWRL 1600 Super 16 Music

6-WKTU 92.3 Mellow 92

7-WPLJ 95.5 New York's Best Rock

8- WYNY 97.1 Y-97

9- WXLO 99X Top 40/Oldies

10 WCBS 101.1 New York's Oldies

11 WPIX 102 Music Oldies

12 WNEW-FM Best Rock Music

No! Christmas music is over, back to normal music.

I still checked on 105.7 and it's still "The Buzz", but I love the oldies on WGNY-AM if it comes into Kingston and Poughkeepsie in the daytime and even crappy at night due to IBOC. WGNY-AM rocks and I will still listen to it, that will bring some listeners from the former "Cool 92.9". But in the Columbia/Greene area, WZCR's "Cruisin 93.5" is also being splattered by WBWZ's "Star 93.3" as I mentioned before, but I can't get the station. I might as well listen to WGNY-AM. As for WVOS-FM 95.9, it is now splattered by WPKF's "Kiss-FM" at 96.1.

As I mentioned last week that Max Kinkel's morning show on WVOS-FM was out but it lasted two months and it was short-lived. If you want to listen to oldies, get a satellite radio or listen to it one of the Music Choice channels from your cable company.

Or check out their website:

As usual, disney sounds like he's on the weed...anyone with a clue have any predictions for '08???

I have two:
* cheap channel breaks up the HV cluster, and all stations go to local ownership....local, personality driven radio with a full , experienced news staff...

WHVW gets a new owner and goes deep 50's and 60's oldies, with the current morning drive host as GM; and live programming all day with a news staff. Plans in place for live remotes every weekend. Revenue goes thru the roof and everyone who made it happen is rewarded for their efforts. ;)

Hey, I can dream, can't I????

Happy new year

But what about Mets baseball? Are they're coming back to News/Talk WKIP? The Yankees are still on "The Wolf" only at 94.3. I but wish that New York Mets will be on other HV stations in the future.

As I was saying oldies is not coming back to the Poughkeepsie area on FM, because WGNY-AM is playing oldies in the daytime, but it doesn't come out at night as I was mentioned on that post. WKNY in Kingston, NY has oldies on Saturday afternoons with Warren Lawrence as well as the "Saturday Night Oldies" show on WABC with Mark Simone.

Au, contrar', dizney...never say never....the oldies format is there for the taking; when cheap channel took over 92.9 when the hole in the market was there, it was a stroke of genius taking an underused freq and bringing up to speed with oldies,slowly..and winding up with a marketable, saleable product when the sold it (traded?) to pamal. Boy do I hate to give cheap channel credit, but the local folks made it happen!!! It's there for anyone who wants to step up to the plate. Randy Turnip's trainwreck ain't cuttin' it; think they are trying to take on 'pdh with the heavy lean towards classis rock/ AOR. classic hits of the 60's/70's/80's it's not; perhaps they should look to the south to a little known station in NYC and see a success story with such a format. (CBS-FM)

it's gonna be a great '08!!

fire at will...

No! Christmas music is over, back to normal music.

Magic 100.9 WKLI is still playing Christmas music. Right now they're playing "The Christmas Shoes" by New Song. I'm listening to the online stream, not the terrestrial signal.

Still xmas music in rotation...

Willie Nelson's Frosty The Snowman, into a version of Rockin Little Christmas on right now, complete with 'Holiday Music Station' and 'The Christmas Station' sweepers.

The wife hopes WRWD dumps CRAPcar coverage.

I'd like to see something else done with 92.1/93.3/97.7. Dance anyone?

I have found myself listening to mainly distant stations over the past couple of years. I don't find any compelling reason to listen to HV radio.

Or better yet....CURRENT rhythmic?

Yeah! Good idea! I guess maybe HV should do a dance format or a rhythmic AC format like the former "Mix 102.7" does or bring back "Rhythm 94.3" since it has been on the air since 2001. It's been 7 years already.

Or maybe WBPM should do a dance format like the one "Pulse 87" in New York City now currently plays current and classic dance format.

You can get any opinion like maybe one of these stations will get a "Scott Shannon's True Oldies Channel" in the Hudson Valley listening area. They do well on WREF in Richfield, CT at 850 AM. I hope WGHQ will get a "True Oldies Channel" and maybe dump some of that "Timeless Favorites" format, but you have it on WNNJ.

I remember back in 1995 when WBPM (B-94) was a current rhythmic station. I also remember how they library was rather restricted (Captain Hollywood Project, Marina) and wished they could have done a lot more with it. I guess licensing held the station back at that time. Also at that time I remember that K-104 was pretty dance friendly for a CHR.

Yet, it would be something if the region would revisit a current dance format....though I would think such a format would greatly benefit Albany and that region. You would get the city crowd, the suburban areas (Colonie, Latham, Watervliet, Delmar) and possibly those to the north (Saratoga, Glens Falls). And that's about it. I don't see many in Schoharie, Eastern Rensselaer, Greene or Columbia Counties flocking to it per se....but who knows.

Thank you Disney! I was getting REAMED in the Philadelphia board for bringing this up! LOL

yep, think a current or a classic dance format would do it here....somebody should step up to the plate....any takers?? Think cheap channels new owners will take it on?? Oldies up for grabs also...I'm not gonna beat the dead horse about the 55 and older demos not being a target for oldies; it would take somebody with a good pair to try it, everybody else is scared to.... ???

Intelligent discussion???? ???
