Predictions for New York Radio in 2009

Now I have done my predictions for Hudson Valley and Albany radio for 2009, now I'm going to start a thread about your predictions for New York Radio in 2009. Here are my predictions.

1. Is WRXP are getting a sports station as ESPN Radio on 101.9?
2. Is CBS-FM going to #1? Are they bringing back the reverb the way Joe McCoy did when he was program director many years ago before "Jack" came in? Are they going to add more specialty shows on CBS-FM maybe a "Music Blimp" type show on a Sunday morning where they can play some New Wave and alternative rock from the late 70's, 80's and early 90's like where Randy Turner (or Randy Turnip) is hosting the show playing music from the New Wave era like Pet Shop Boys, the Tom Tom Club, Elvis Costello, Simple Minds, Human League, Adam Ant and a few others in the mix? (maybe Pat St. John will do it, he is a big New Wave fan and I hope he will do better than Randy). Never mind, just a rumor mill.
3. Is Pulse 87 going back to Russian programming? Why not put it on 92.3!
4. Is WNYM "The Apple" going back to religious format or maybe a "Real Oldies" station on 970.
5. Is Opie & Anthony ending their show as of March? Maybe! I love Bob & Sheri a lot better than O&A.
6. Is Lou Dobbs and Glenn Beck are coming to WOR? Glenn Beck did very well when he is on a number of stations like WKIP in Poughkeepsie and WROW up in Albany, and so does Lou Dobbs, he was on WGNY-AM 1220 during the Summer, I hope WOR will do it.

Those are not predictions, just a regurgitation of rumors previously posted here (and with terrible grammar and syntax). But if you want feedback,

1. Denials all around, so probably yes.
2. Reverb merits a prediction? And what is this "Music Blimp" which you hype incessantly? Methinks you're getting paid per mention of it.
3a. Maybe. 3b. Because CBS owns 92.3, silly. Putting Pulse there would mean Mega would have to buy WXRK, and lord knows they don't have cash.
4. Who cares?
5. Comparing Bob and Sheri to O&A is like comparing Barney the Dinosaur and Monty Python. Apples and oranges. Duhhhhh.
6. Yes, this is done. Next "prediction?"

My prediction for 2009: More insipid, inane, and borderline indecipherable posts attempting to relate Hudson Valley radio to the NYC market. Yes, you.

I think it would be foolish to have a sports station on FM. The range is smaller compared to 1050 and there would have to be a network of stations to cover the extended NYC Metropolitan area if that happened. 1040 AM and 107.1 FM from easter LI, do not extend the range that much. I agree with the moderator of the other board that 101.9 will change formats, but not back to smooth jazz. I really thik that it is time to give country music a chance on NYC radio, but I doubt it will happen. There is still the demographic issue with country music on the radio.

Sports on FM would cover some very significant areas, though, that none of the AM signals or 107.1 currently cover: many parts of NJ, and much of Eastern Nassau and Western/Central Suffolk county, where 1050 gets torn up at night and where 1040 and 107.1, respectively, do not come in.

That said, there's other, more inexpensive ways they could cover these regions as well (purchasing more local AM's or FM's, for instance), so I don't think sports on 101.9 or any other FM frequency is a done deal. I do also think it is a waste for one of the precious few commercial FM frequencies in NYC to go to something that is non-music, but maybe that's just me.

Other predictions:

1. WNEW will NOT return to NYC radio and certainly not to 102.7.
2. Fresh will stay put.
3. Z100 will continue to be #1, 12+, for most of the year.
4. K-Rock's ratings after the new tweak will not go up and may even drop a bit. Format change? I'd say there's a 60-70% chance of that happening before 2009 is out.
5. WRXP will gain very little traction...probably not rising far above a 1 share. They'll probably give it at least until spring, however, unless the rumors of a sale/lease do turn out to be correct.
6. Pulse 87's spot load will continue to increase and the station will make it through 2009.
7. CBS-FM will not see a big increase once the Christmas numbers come out, and will not go Christmas next year. Lite FM, on the other hand, will likely see a nice bump.
8. Would not be surprised to see even more firings at struggling companies like Emmis and Citadel, affecting their NY stations.
9. HD Radio will continue to remain almost a non-entity.
10. Kiss FM will continue not to stream and we'll continue to see continued postings about it.
11. We will not see a return of the "fairness doctrine" or "equal time" rules, but many people will continue to insist that it will return and that it will kill conservative talk radio. Most of those people will also continue to confuse the two rules.
12. WOR's numbers will increase at the expense of WABC, but WABC will still be on top between the two. WABC will continue shuffling its lineup around and will continue to be pretty much non-local and syndicated.
13. Hot talk on FM will not return in 2009.
14. Opie and Anthony's contract will run out and will not be renewed (may coincide with a format change at 92.3)
15. Country music will not return to the NYC airwaves (on regular FM or even AM) in 2009.
16. We'll continue to see more and more pirate stations all over the dial.
17. No one is going to try putting a new rock format of any kind on the air despite the music's popularity with the younger demos.
18. Over at the "dentist" board, postings will continue to be censored/removed continuously.
19. On this board, we'll continue to see incessant and continuous postings about Hudson Valley radio, microwave ovens, the New York Dolls, country music, the death of Pulse 87, postings with the smiley and bold features greatly overused, posts about the return of WNEW, Emmis live streaming, and various other posts with indecipherable/poor spelling, grammar, and syntax

A more plausible scenario is that Rap/Hip Hop album sales, if it hasn't already done so, will drop below 10% of all album sales. I can't find information for 2008 as yet, but I'd surmise it's been another rather abysmal year for the genre.

Here's mine. Howard Stern will negotiate to return to local NYC radio, but I can't fathom who will be able to meet his $demand$. With much of his pay in stock, and that stock trading at 12 cents a share, he forgot the old addage: "Watch what you wish for." He blew up his own career. He'll be interviewing politicos with Don Imus on WABC.

And I see a move: Joey Reynolds to daytime on WOR.

Joey Reynolds does deserve a better time slot, like you said during the day. But I think he may actually be enjoying the overnight gig. I dont think he could have envisioned his success. This is probably the longest he has stayed in one place during his career. I would like to hear him do a music shift on CBS-FM or NJ 101.5 ocassionally.

Here's my prediction: Given the already proven incompetence of radio station directors/suits/whatever, 92.3 K-Rock will flip to all classic rock to compete with Q, which means if you like classic rock you basically have 3 stations to choose from (with about half of RXP's playlist consisting of classic rock).

In terms of this board, the same moron who keeps asking for a station that focuses on the NY Dolls, Blondie, Television, etc. will still be allowed to post for some odd reason.

You're right Syntax, this is not like me. :-\

Let's just say, in so many words, that right now I think someone at Pulse should really step up and answer the concerns of all the negative postings that have been happening here and that I should no longer be the "guinea pig" to do it anymore. Granted, I will always fight for dance music in any way shape or form and if people want to listen to Pulse, that's fine, I'm certainly not going to discourage anyone from doing so. I just think with me, putting my neck out all of the time for this station and not getting any feedback from where it matters, I'm starting to get tired.

By all means it is NOT a reflection of the on-air personalities, past and present, that are there. Andre, Jewelz, Showboat, Ruby, Abel, Vinnie and Laura have been nothing but wonderful with me! Star and his crew were wonderful to me! I've met most of the mixmasters as well.

Like I said, I will ALWAYS fight it out for dance music and lend my support to everyone affiliated. But after learning a couple of things, I don't really feel "comfortable" regarding Pulse. Maybe that can change down the road, but for now....I'll just keep on doing what I am doing. We still have a community that is supportive and I certainly don't want to let anyone down!

Tony, I think it'll be very difficult for someone in Pulses's management to comment on current or future prospects for the station. In my opinion, since Mega is publicly traded, any information outside of what is already available to the public will more then likely not be provided. Think about it, any kind of news coming from the inside would for sure have an impact on people's reaction to MMDA stock. So even if someone claims to have the facts, they will never identify themselves, this in effect, will invalidate their statements as fact.

Like you, I would love to see some hard facts from the inside regarding the future of Pulse; Unfortunately, I think we'll just have to settle for the rumors, wishes, thoughts, wants and desires, by all us speculators on the side lines. It does make for interesting read when I have a few minutes to spare throughout the day, so I'll take it. ;D

PS. I just turned on my radio to 87.7 and heard Pulse on the air. Therefore, as far as I'm concerned, the 'current' state of Pulse is functional, on-air and in business. lol
