Predictions for SD in 2006?

I have to say, I never had a problem with Clear channel owning more than one station in San Diego, nor did I Jacor. But c'mon, 13 or 14 stations? Speaking purely from a listener standpoint, the problem was that there was no competition. Z90 could not compete with 933, or 94.1, or 925, because they were all owned by the same company. "Cluster Cooperaton" became a buzz phrase synonimous with lame radio, imho.

But with the divestment of Z90, 92.5, and 91X, I expect San Diego radio wars to heat up in 2006. It should be especially interesting to see Z90, staffed with former 933 people go after 933 in the new year. This promises to get nasty, and nasty is fun.

Also, it might be interesting to see how 91X and FM 94/9 duke it out, especially since 94/9 will no longer be able to claim that they are the local choice. Could this spell the end of Alternative on 94/9? Or perhaps 94/9 will tweak and take on Rock 105 so they can keep the whole "we're local" approach?

And what about 92.5? Perhaps they will take on Star and Jack in the new year, with perhaps a sort of KBIG 104 approach to Hot AC.

Yep, 2006 promises to be an ineresting year in San Diego broadcasting!
