Predictions. Which Stations Do You Think Will Flip In 2008?

Anybody have an predictions as to which stations, if any will flip here in Phoenix in 2008?

97.5 - I think this station has to be a top contender to flip in the future. These stations are struggling all across the country. I used to like the station when it first debuted, but they have been on the air for over a year now and they have had no success. Why not try to fix low ratings? Maybe it's time to get in some more high profile jocks? Or would that not even matter? There's nothing that sticks out with any of their jocks. They have one guy on in the morning, he's ok, but I mean there's nothing special about their show. Nina D probably has the most to offer with the midday shift. I could see her going to maybe Power or Jamz. Then you got their program director Robert Lewis doing the afternoon shift. Nothing highlighting his show either. He should stick to programming the station and getting their music right instead of focusing on being an on air talent. Maybe some mix shows or some sort of themed shows would help? It's just kinda sad to see a station not make any changes when they suffer so bad in the ratings.

103.9 - I agree with many that a simulcast of Power 98.3 would be good for this signal. The Edge is another station that seems lost when it comes to fitting in with the Phoenix rock cluster. Don't know if it could ever be saved.

95.1 - I used to kind of like this station. They had MG's Morning Madhouse on for awhile, which I liked listening to when they were over on good old Power 92 before they changed over to 98.3 They had an entertaining show, and granted I know it was bilingual, but I did understand some of the spanish. They didn't last long though, and now it was just confirmed that MG got hired on over at Jamz part time. Jackie Morales and Jasmine also have air shifts at Jamz. Jamz just sucked all their talent away. I don't know what this stations plans are, but I can't see the Hurban format lasting much longer on there.

101.1 - We already know that this station has been sold so it will be interesting to see if they leave the dance format, or if they switch over to something else.

What does everyone else think?

Trumper was over from day one when he didn't hire Bruce Kelly for PD and mornings.

Would have created immediate buzz with listeners AND clients PLUS Kelly was THE connection back to the music when it was dominate on ZZP/Y95/Power.

Another case of hiring from weak "talent" from outside the market with no connection to the past, present AND future.

As far as the other signals - no comment needed. history.

Umm, wouldn't Bruce Kelly now be considered weak "talent" from outside the market with no connection to the present AND future? Note I removed "past"... he has that. Unfortunately half of the market has never heard of him. What have you done for me lately? NOT MUCH.

Agree this station is a mess and think there is no hope for this station. I think I said in a previous post, if energy goes bye bye bye , I would make this station a hybird of classice dance daytime and new dance at night

If they scrap the alternative format and simulcast Power, I really think the cluster of KUPD, KDKB, and KSLX should take a good hard look at doing a alternative format in one of their properties

Very interesting.. what to do what to do..... I do miss my Free FM but agree the way it was done on 101.5 was not the right way. Wouldn't mind a more local free fm type station kinda like Real Radio in Orlando.

Movin' might be a mess, but flipping it to a format (dance) that would get even LOWER ratings isn't a smart thing to do. Not saying it wouldn't happen, because there's obviously a dearth of programming savvy on the rimshot signals in this market, but it would be a bad move.

Why? First off, a format change at one of those properties would take effort and cost money. Sandusky isn't known for putting either into their properties. Second, isn't the "alternative format" kinda dead...at least here in Phoenix?

I wouldn't count on ANYONE doing a Free FM type station anywhere. That was a nationwide format abortion, and nobody should even try to conceive another bastard child like that.

My prediction is that there will be no format flips in 2008. The economy is a little shaky right now, and all the stations in town are struggling to make budgets. This will continue on through at least the middle of the year. Format flips are expensive, both from a programming and from a sales perspective, but most importantly format flips are risky. The only way I see a station flipping is if it gets sold and already has a format that generates neither ratings nor revenue....and that'd be KNRJ

Actually, no...alternative researches well in the market, plus Arbitron's new PPM is showing (in the markets in which it's been either implemented or tested) that the demand for alternative and rock formats has been greatly underestimated...so a station that executes the alternative format well should theoretically do fine. That begs the question...what does 103.9 need to do better/differently?
