Being from that East Texas Market, there may be some predictions about what may happen:
Since there is no CHR in town, 99.3 can convert back to when they were Y99 and work from there. To be brutally honest, the Jack format is really not going all too well. The "we play anything" jive is all palyed out!
If you drop classic rock from 96X, you're looking at one big void for that format. The reliabilty of such would be from Shreveport or Dallas to listen for. KKTX will retian that format. KYKX would stay the same with their staff and their grossly overrated program director who will not die from his potency of egotism of the morning show he "owns." KOOI has FINALLY made good sense of bringing Dave Moreland back to mornings. Ratings from The Breeze registered pretty fair while he was there. Let's hope for the best for him and hopefully Access 1 doesn't dump him. Dave is just too good.
In other words, Access 1 is starting to make sense about 60% of the time in one of the stations it owns. Let's hope they can make sense on the remaining 40% just like they did so well with the Shreveport market in which did a whole hell of a lot.
The GAP stations (formerly owned by CC) may be able to keep the stations stablized unless otherwise. We'll just see how well they can turn things around. And if for some reason 96X DO go CHR, so be it.
The downside of radio:
KZEY, I'm afraid will end up laying to rest. Jerry Russell has maliciously killed all the heritage that was worth. To make it all the worse, but for the better, there may be a glemaing light at the end of the tunnel that shows the end of the Community Broadcast/MRS regime. Amongst the reasons: FCC violations and fines, bad business practices and other ills that will cause Russell to get out of the business for good. Someone with some very serious radio sense will resurrect KZEY from that "Flava" state and just go urban oldies. In a market full of FMs with decent listenership, KZEY may rebound as one of the stations that DO care about. The ratings may not register much, but it will be much better served.
A bright side for KWRD-AM, however, should it ever happen, they will have total control and responsibilty of the station and retain its heritage.
The best stations: Gleiser. KDOK has a great station to enjoy with their oldies; KTBB is still undisputed as the most powerful news/talk station. Now they know their radio!
