Premiere Announces New Hosts For Rush Slot

Chicago, good luck. WLS is tied to Bogino, WGN isn't interested and WIND is unlikely. Detroit, WJR is Cumulus, there might be a rimshot that'll pick it up but Clay and Buck won't be on the big signal.

What's up with those few stations that Premiere announced as signing new multi-year deals for the Rush Limbaugh Show after Rush died?

I can only think of two. They likely had to sign new deals for this show.

One of the new affiliates just signed up last month:

I think there's also one in Florida.
One of our rimshots (with no real signal in Knoxville) WPFT, Pigeon Forge picked Dead Rush (and will presumably carry the new show) up after the Cumulus News-Talker dropped him, a few weeks before Bongino started.

iHeart may have to do what they did with BIN and buy some AMs to get this and the rest of their syndicated talkers cleared in major markets. Or perhaps flip the BIN stations after the marketing agreement with the advertisers run out.

This particular show will be a tougher clear because of the two hosts with no history together. I don't know about Buck, but Clay doesn't play well with others. He is an alpha male who will say what he thinks regardless of the consequences. That may get him press coverage, but it could lead to conflicts.

I am guessing that, tomorrow, the two hosts will spend their first few minutes on the air trying to put our minds at ease by letting us know how they met, what they have in common that will cause them to set aside their differences, and why they think that their partnership will work.

As we get ready for the debut of Travis and Sexton this week, I wonder: has there ever been a successful political talk show, with more than one host? I can't think of any that have been syndicated.

In the news talk format, none that I'm aware of nationally. KMOX is doing a 3-host show in the former Rush slot.

The new show launches Monday on 400 stations. That's 200 fewer stations than claimed by Rush.

The question is which major markets are void? I don't see Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle, or Dallas.
Podcast only within Iheart app if you live in Chicago, Philadelphia, DC, Detroit, San Francisco, Seattle and Dallas for now until proven otherwise.

Alternatively, listeners in those cities can listen to stations such as WOR New York and KEIB Los Angeles live through the iHeartRadio app.

There's a lot of competition in that time slot. For example, besides Dan Bongino, Derick Hunter is on WCBM and Greg Kelly on WABC - two excellent shows. Another enjoyable host, Mike Opelka, is doing WPHT next week but I think that's temporary. I'll tune in Travis & Sexton tomorrow out of curiosity but if it isn't compelling there's no reason to stay with it.

It'll be the rare market that has both Bongino and Travis/Buck on comparable signals. Some markets will have neither show.

Dreadful show opening!

1. Rush Limbaugh is dead. Let's get past that.
2. We don't care who you are. Don't lose the audience with a long, boring intro. Get into it and entertain us! Your resumes will unfold as the show progresses.

"But you're all scared you can't drop indiscriminate "n"-bombs on Facebook without getting fired!"

Basically, the new show is the same as the old show, except without Rush Limbaugh and with a different name. The show uses the same theme tune that is based on The Pretenders' "My City Was Gone" and the same commercial break sound.

Clay Travis and Buck Sexton, the new hosts, said that they would continue the fight that Rush Limbaugh started, and that they would interact with the audience as much as possible. In short, they tried to make the show more about their listeners than it is about themselves. They did not say how they become acquainted with each other, nor did they make a case for their partnership during the first half hour.

It will be interesting to see how long this show lasts.

Didn’t really listen much but some of the Twitter traffic was complaining about Clay “supporting the murder of unborn children” (being pro-choice apparently) and having voted for Obama twice. Hmm.

Oh, you think so?? I just tuned in to catch the end of the show and heard Limbaugh droning on in a very long clip.

If this show is going to succeed it must do so on its own merits, not because the hosts are kissing the deceased posterior of the former host!

I wonder how much of this pandering is due to the hosts and how much is due to management. Too bad, I've enjoyed Buck Sexton but I guess that's over for now.
