Prepare for Epic Failure

OK kids, let's get out our crystal ball (and maybe crystal sets, too) and see what happens this weekend.

With the predicted storm it will be interesting to see what stations step up to the plate and provide some good useable storm coverage verses those who stick with voicetracked / syndicated / satellite programming. Add to this many stations and/or groups who no longer have the news operations they once had 5 to 10 years ago. Will they have they part timers come in? Throw up their arms and say the hell with it? Take a network feed and hope for the best? Your guess is as good as mine at the moment. BTW: I'm including both AM and FM in this pending mess.

This could be a case where local radio either shines with community service or proves it's not worth 10 cents to tune in and you may as well just listen to an iPod.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and predict that WEBE won't be live and local during a weather emergency. Again.

So that leaves the CBS stations and WDRC-FM and WCCC. DRC runs Charlie Tuna off the satellites on Sunday night till 11, then automated music till 5 a.m. Monday. It'll be interesting to see if anyone comes in to work during the storm. Is CCC usually live and local on Sunday night/early Monday?

CBS Radio Hartford is staffed 24/7. WTIC AM and FM have people in the studio 24/7, and they oversee WRCH and WZMX when those studios are empty... that's only overnights on WRCH and for a couple of hours from 2A-6A on WZMX.

CBS Radio is the envy of the market when it comes to an event like Irene. Reelyreal is exactly right, WTIC will call in any and everyone and that coverage can be simulcasted on all of their properties. This is why they don't have an agreement with one of the local TV stations - they don't need one.

So, is nobody planning to run WTNH's coverage? If not, that would speak volumes about their standing in the market.

By the way, I lived in CT back when Gloria blew through and most FM radio stations did similar simulcasts of TV coverage - or of AM news stations (e.g. WTIC) - back then. I think that KC-101 simulcasted with 13 WAVZ; that would NEVER happen now!

Our plans for the Hall cluster will be pretty much along the same line as what we did during Gloria & Bob. Two members of our News Department will be at the station in Norwich with the third to file reports from the Westerly-Stonington area. Our stations have teamed up with WFSB and Kevin Hogan will be covering the Niantic area shoreline and has offered his assistance as per our arrangement with the station. We will also have staff on-location at the City of Norwich Emergency Operations Center which is located at Norwich Public Utilities. We installed a pair of links to provide live updates from there--one in the EOC Center via a Marti and another (via a Telos) at the NPU Control Center--providing visual access to the power grid monitoring screens. If we lose telephone service, we have a Marti back-up there as well and as a last resort, a two-way link to the stations--all of which were tested today. My plans are to provide feeds to all four stations from there when the storm approaches--probably starting late Saturday or more-likely during the overnight Sunday morning. WCTY is regularly staffed 24/7. WICH will be staffed during the day Sunday and staff will available to pre-empt tracking on WKNL & WNLC. Depending on conditions, we have the ability to simulcast but hope to provide separate coverage on all four stations. We'll see how it flys....

91.7 WXCI DJ's Have asked not to do their Shift. we are running automation and see what Monday Brings. our Transmitter site has no back-up on WCSU Westside however, our Transmitter is below the tree line on a Cell phone tower so it should be ok. I am finishing up my Morning shift on 97.7 WGMT up in Vermont and heading home to be with Friends and family in SW CT. Radio stations that have had me in the past for Internships know's how to get a hold of me if they are in need of helping hands it would be a damn honor.

With storm updates and information.....Webe tends to be one of the more Live stations on the shoreline, believe it or not.

We're live simulcasting on 960 and 101. Been on since 5, been here since 9P.

Stay safe, all.

Epic failure = WDRC-FM/AM, WMRQ, and WCCC-FM. None of these stations carried Malloy's speech at 7AM. Plus both Spanish Stations WLAT 910 and WRYM 840.

KISS 95.7 has Courtney on and she is taking calls.

The River 105.9 is taking calls.

Country 92.5 is taking calls.

KC 101.3 is simulcasting local call-in from WELI 960.

WATR 1320 is on live an local. (At least for now. Not sure if they will switch over to The Polish Eagle Polka show at 8:05).

WZBG 97.3 is local.

Stations down for the count: WSNG AM 610 (Torrington), Radio Cantico Nuevo AM 990 (Southington), and WPRX AM 1120 (Bristol)

I want to give CMG a round of applause. They put WSTC/WNLK on 95.9 WFOX for a time giving a chance of the only local coverage for lower Fairfield after 8am Sunday. Cumulus did a good job on WRKI 95.1 as well for norther Fairfield and Litchfield <-- (spelleing) county CT. otherwise for NYC 880 AM and 1010 Wins had great coverage. Did not even bother with 101.9 news.

My Comcast Internet and Cable TV went down at 11:20AM and still has not been restored and I can't access this site with my cell phone.

WATR 1320 blew out their Polka and Italian Shows and provided live and local coverage in English. They brought in their big dog Larry Rifkin, who is normally on weekdays 10-1. He was joined by Tom Graves and someone else, who's name I didn't catc.

990 AM returned to the air at 8:30AM with their Itailan Show. Since the Lutheran Church in Bristol was closed there was no tape of their mass to air at 1PM, so they put in a half hour CD of Italian Music. That ran out at 1:30PM and the station remained on with dead air the rest of the day. Still had dead air when I went to bed at 1AM. They're still running 2500 watts 24/7.

The Talk of CT did not have any coverage at all. Not sure what time 610AM came back on, but I heard them on in the afternoon with the music they were playing on 1360.

1410/1300 ran NBC 30's audio until they switched to a simulcast of WFAN for the Yankees-Oriel Doubleheader. (WCBS had uninterrupted coverage. The Mets were rained out, so that's why WFAN had the Yankees game).

WPLR brought in Chaz & AJ. They were taking calls interspersed with music and providing updates from Channel 3.

KC-101 simulcast WELI until 2PM. They were taking calls and had local hosts on.

The River was local and not VTd. They were taking calls and had on Joe A plus Renee came in later. Later they were taking calls and playing music.

After carrying the governor's press conference at 7AM, HOT, LITE, and 96.5 all went back to regular programming. Alan Camp was on WRCH in addition to Greg Roche.

WLIS/WMRD did not provide any coverage at all. They ran their normal pre-taped shows and ethnic programming all day.

Here's what happened at CBS Radio:

WTIC-AM and WTIC-FM were live 24 hours, as they always are. Ray Dunnaway came on at 5AM on the AM.

WRCH and WZMX went live at 5am as well. All four stations carried the Governor at 7am, then continued with their own live programming.

At 9AM, all four CBS Radio stations began carrying live coverage from WTIC News Talk 1080 until at least noon, then continued with their own coverage.

Meteorologists Sam Sampieri, Joe Furey, and Bob Cox were all live in studio giving updated forecasts.

Also, WILI & WILI-FM in Willimantic as well as WINY in Putnam were all live all day Sunday, and of course coverage continued today.
