Prepare Yourself For WGN To Suck Less In 2008

W

War Of Attrition

Guest
Randy Michaels is on the way in. Geriatric toaster-talk is on the way out.

What an exciting time to be a Chicago radio listener.

Unfortunately what you are saying is probably true, I really hope they don't ruin WGN. It may not be my favorite station, but
when the weather gets bad or something local is going on at 2 in the morning it is sure nice to have a station like WGN to count
on. It is a Chicago institution and one of the few AM stations in the whole country that is local 24/7. I hope Randy doesn't do to this
station what he did to Z95 in the early nineties.

While I was being silly yesterday on another posting, but I believe that WGN is one of the best radio stations in America. Some of the stuff skew too old for me but it is(IMHO) a great station.

Sure some of the program themes seem to be inane but it is relief not to undergo "war and peace" everyday as the do on some other stations. My biggest concern is that Randy Michaels will see WGN as a lab to bring younger listener back to AM radio. In that attempt, he'll start messing with the shows and sign folks like Mancow Muller in an effort to bring an "edge" to the station. He'll tweak the cost structure by bringing syndicated programming in non peak hours and cut down on things such as the news staff. One example is WJR in Detroit where a formerly great station is now just a shell of its past. I happened to listen to them today. My god, the newsperson couldn't read. It was an embarrassment.

Please remember that I'm a former broadcaster who now just plays the perimeter but my core business instincts is reading some recent signs from the new Tribune team with alarm. Whenever I hear "synergies", it says that after the layoffs, alot of folks will be doing double duty.

If Mr. Michaels is not successful, he'll then treat the station as a "cash cow" and drain the talent, milking the profits as long as he can and then selling the station.

Another Chicago institution down the drain. :'(

Rumor has it that Mancow is bout to lose his SF outlet because his show has become completely directionless. He can't seem to decide if he's a shock jock or a bible thumping right winger. I think Randy Michaels would take pass on this has been.

Do you think Randy would be interested in bringing on Garry Meier? The only change I would make at WGN is to bring on someone to replace Milt week nights. He'd be fine on a weekend shift, but there needs to be someone with more personality running that show. To me, he's the party killer after a Cubs game

How long does anyone think that Zell/Michaels will keep the Cubbies on WGN when the team is sold (or sooner,) and if they give up the Cubs ... where would they end up, in your opinion? Anyone think that even though the Cubs are not in Zell's future ... that they'll still stay on 720?

I think Zell will probably keep the Cubs on WGN, not because he cares one bit about the team, but because the Cubs bring in
the youngest audience on WGN. The Cubs also make a lot of money for the station even when they are losing(insert joke here if u want).
One thing I know about Zell is he likes money, and if there is money to be made he will get as much as he can, then IF there is no more $$$
to make he would probably dump the Cubs from WGN,or should I say "Hell 720". Sorry just having memories of Z95.

Merry Christmas from the tiny town of Delavan, Wisconsin

At age 41, I've listened to WGN for over 20 years. I've seen it change from the Wally Phillips & Floyd Brown past, to the Spike O'Dell & Nick DeGillio present. One thing has remained the same. WGN has always meant live, local & friendly personalities who listeners identify with. I don't enjoy all of the air talent & I do have my faves. I hope WGN will always mean Chicago...Not just a 38-state blowtorch that carries the same things you can find on the rest of the AM dial. IMHO, WGN is more in tune with its listeners than any other station in the country.

.
Spent 4 years living in and around "Dull-livin'", Wis. Those were good times in the early 80's. When it snows in the middle of downtown with Christmas lights on it looks like Bedford Falls from "It's a Wonderful Life"....... :D

And Merry Christmas back to you as well, from another Wisconsinite. I couldn't agree more. I grew up listening to WGN in the 70's on, and I would hate to see that station trashed. Some things just shouldn't be messed with. And, while I proposed changes earlier in this thread, I would still like the general feel of the station to stay the same.
