Prescott Radio

I see there's an application for a station on 1240 kHz in Prescott AZ. I don't have any further news, I just thought it was interesting another station would try to make a go of it.

1240 would be a new frequency for that area. There used to be a station licensed to Prescott on 1340 in the late 60s..the call letters escape me now.

Thanks to the Old Gringo's yearbook stash...it was KENT. Owned at one time by
Ray Odom; began as KZOK in 1958 under Dick Gilbert.

There was never quite room for 3 AM stations in the 50's through 70's, but KENT was always my favorite of them.

KENT originally operated in a very cool turnkey Airstream trailer studio supplied by Collins. Started by Gilbert and Odom as a C&W 250 watter with one of Collins' wonderful 300J transmitters, then sold to a local rancher named Ira McCormick, sold to STP Corporation as a tax writeoff, upgraded to 1 KW, then sold to Sam Pendleton and the old KDOT (Central Arizona Broadcasting), who switched to beautiful music, then dark in 1974.

My late brother and Pendleton loaded the CCA 1000D into a UHaul, and it ended up at KDOT's co-owned KSET El Paso as main, in use until somewhat recently. Dick Gilbert continued to own the KENT site in Government Canyon. It was vandalized and off-air for many years, but was later sold to KNOT, which currently operates there.

There are also current mutually-exclusive (MX) apps in the area on 1340 and 1400, and a current CP for a 5 tower directional on 1300.

It's interesting to me that the apps for 1240 and 1340 are both from "Wireless, Inc" Plano, Illinois. Both applications list the same Prescott Lakes Parkway transmitter site and both are for 170 watts.

Additional note to above, Wireless, Inc also has an app for Prescott at 1400, 170 watts with a Prescott Valley site.

Furthermore, the cp for 1300 in Prescott is for sale and listed by Media Services Group, listed as following:

"Prescott, AZ
Construction Permit for AM station at 1300 kHz. Excellent full time coverage. $20,000.00"

The site is off of White Spar road with 6 towers and 1.5 KW daytime and .25 KW nightime - this has got to be a very expensive proposition to build out in a market dominated by Phoenix and Flagstaff and Mingus Mtn FM's.

Wish that 1340 app could be moved over the mountain to Jerome to build a community/local station by ME!
