"Presidential" EAS test/wireless test.

Did we all live?
How did your local stations do? I got the alert on my phone at 2:18, radio stations lagged about 3-5 minutes behind.
For whatever reason I got it on my phone a second time at 2:38pm EDT

I got nothing as did many on my friends list. #epicfail.

I got an annoying buzz on my phone that went longer than usual. The idea that the president can "alert" me is pretty frightening.

I got the alert on my mobile phone and noticed at the same time my cable box showed some sort of error code. The error code lasted for several minutes eventually clearing by itself. I was not watching TV at the time so don't know if programming was interrupted or not.

Trump can't use the National Presidential EAS Alert/Messaging system like he uses Twitter often, apparently. He cant. And neither can anyone else. Neither did Obama.... and neither have all the other agencies who have access to it. This system has been going on for years and no ones ever complained about it yet. People are mis-informed, see that it's a Presidential Alert and don't bother to find out anymore info then go off half cocked.

What you saw on your phone was exactly like what you hear on the radio with those beeps/blurps and voices alerting you to ann amber alert, or computerized voices warning about severe weather (tornadoes, etc). No one can abuse the radio/tv alerting system either.

This was a post based upon fact. NO political comments about Trump this, Obama that. They will be deleted. I NEVER discuss anything remotely political or controversial on my page but I am so beyond frustrated with the people ranting about this when they have no clue, that I had to say something. (I saw several people said they were going to turn their phones off, some said "I hope I don't get another one:")

PUHHHHLEASSSSEEEE! I would do better trying to bang my farqing head against a brick wall then explain it to someone who can't get past their Trump rage. BUT, most of my friends out there are smart people and understand. It's mainly been friends or friends I've seen complaining.

Wether I support Trump or not is IRRELEVANT here.... this is about facts and what this alerting system is built for and can/can't do!

Signed,
A Broadcaster who wants to bang his head against a brick wall and get drunk after reading all the rantings on facebook today about Trump using the EAS cell phone alert like twitter

What cell carrier do you have? I'm 80 miles SE of you and I got it on Verizon 4GLTE,

one Comment from a friend at a radio station was, "Verizon has been spotty across the country. If people didn't get it, it was either due to an older style phone or Verizon from the anecdotal evidence I have been seeing across the country."

The idea that the president can "alert" me is pretty frightening.

What is so frightening about the idea of a presidential alert? If there is an extreme national emergency and I'm off some place ignoring the news of the world I would appreciate a heads up.

TTBOMK The government has never officially used EAS. Even on 9-11.

I'm perfectly OK with the idea that national alerts are a waste of time and resources, though you should have been complaining while legislation was being passed. A consequence of our changing media landscape is people not listening to radio or watching TV while severe weather, or a national emergency (though I'm hard pressed to determine what, other than an all-out nuclear event, that would be) is happening but most everyone has their phones. Had the election gone the other way in 2016, other than a few Alex Jones conspiracy nuts, it would be a routine alert. If I'm being told that the "Presidential Alert" is the beginning of fascism, I'll entertain that notion if you'd have been just as upset if Hillary was President. The media and activists have been playing up the "OMG Trump's going to text my phone OMG RESIST!" angle since the original scheduled date.

Keep in mind the current administration has already proposed defunding WWV and the Naval Observatory Master Clock.

Given my choice, I'd rather have WWV than phone alerts. But we don't get a vote on it.

I am on AT&T in Riverside County, CA and got no alert. None of the other family phones on the same account got it, either. That is why they are testing it.

Actually, if you read the details of the regulations enacted during the Obama administration, the EAS (broadcast) is to be joined with cellular service (WEA).

This is the fourth test of the EAS under new specifications; it is the first that includes cellular alerts.

A "Presidential" alert is not actually sent by the President, nor can the president initiate an alert himself. This type of alert is a national level alert, and requires multiple persons entering passwords at the same time to enact (this requirement was added after the Hawaii fiasco about incoming missiles). The "Presidential" word indicates just that this is the highest level of alert.

Regionally, yes. Nationally, no.

The Hawaii incoming missile alert was an example of an official government alert at the next highest level.

The only difference today is that the WEA portion of the 2012 regulations, amended, was activated. That's the "Wireless" portion.

"The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) today, Oct. 3. The date is the backup date after the initial test was scrubbed on Sept. 20 due to response efforts to Hurricane Florence."

I didn't say that he did. I don't like my phone used for any alerts, including Amber ones.
I also don't like the idea of weather radio being used for Amber alerts. It is highly annoying for me, near Nashville, to be awakened by an Amber alert out of Memphis. It is just as annoying to be awakened by weather information that does not pertain to me, when I have my weather radio set to alert me only for events in my county.

As for the "presidential" alert, I got mine at 1:19 p.m. Because I didn't get it at 1:18, I thought that maybe I would not get it at all. A couple of minutes later, I was in the car, and did indeed hear the one over the radio from a local station, but only one local station. Similar to the way that they "break in" for weather-related announcements.

I'm in Knoxville and I get those Memphis Amber Alerts too. I support the system; we have a local case where a man who murdered his daughter's mother then took the child was caught when someone in Ohio heard the alert (it was suspected he was in Ohio) and realized he was fololowing the car. Still, it's not likely at 2am I'm going to be on the road finding a child from 400 miles away.

HOT 93.7 the hip-hop station in Hartford was discussing the alert this morning. One of the hosts DJ Buck (who is also the PD of the station) said he got the alert twice while co-host Nancy Barrow said she didn't get any. I tuned in in the middle and didn't hear whether the other co-hosts Stevey Nuenez and Geninsiss Robles (Sic) got the alerts.

A caller called in and said she was going to hire a lawyer and sue Verizon stating the alert was an invasion of her privacy. The hosts agreed that it was an invasion of privacy.

As for myself? I got the alert even though I do not have cellular service. I can only use my phone on wi-fi for internet access. I also got an alert the night before about a Flash Flood Warning. I have an LG Optimus Zone 3 phone and when I had pre-paid service it was through Verizon.
