North Georgia Radio Station Back On Air; Listeners to Determine Format! May 19, 2006, For Immediate Release Radio Station WHEL-FM signed back on the air this week, after several months of silence. “The New 105-1” is the first broadcast property operated by Oconee River Broadcasting, LLC, of Georgia. Oconee River President KJ Allen, who will also server as the station’s General Manager, launches the company after a successful stint as Operations Manager of heritage country station WSM-AM in Nashville, TN – home of the Grand Ole Opry. Previously, Allen spent several years in North Georgia radio, at the former South 106 in Gainesville, and as Operations Manager of Southern Broadcasting’s Athens cluster (Magic 102, Rock 103-7 (now Bulldog 103.7), & 106.1 WNGC). “My partners and I have been looking for a good while for just the right situation to enter into as our first station. Fortunately, conditions were right with WHEL to bring it back on the air. We couldn’t be more excited to bring a high-quality locally-run radio station to North Georgia. Plus, what could be better than letting our listeners determine our format?” Allen refers to the current positioning of The New 105-1, whereupon the listeners vote online for what format they’d like the station to be, and the leading vote-getting format at any given time is the format on the air. “It’s very unconventional, but we are confidant that the listeners of this radio station will make a wise decision,” says Allen. “Whichever format is the winner as of June 1 st at 1:05 PM will be the direction that 105.1 heads in. Be sure to vote now at TheNew1051.com!!” Joining Allen as managing partner is Benji Kurtz, also a Georgia radio veteran. Kurtz & Allen first worked together in Athens, and have enjoyed searching for their first broadcast property. In addition to his stint at Southern Broadcasting, Kurtz’ Georgia radio experience also extends to The WSB Radio Group in Atlanta.
