Press release: DISH Network Introduces `DishFAMILY' Programming Tier

Yesterday, Dish Network announced it's new 'family-friendly' tier called DISH Family, promising aproximately 40 channels as a standalone package that starts at $19.99:

http://www.tmcnet.com/usubmit/2006/01/19/1299122.htm

Notable includes: Fox News & CNN Headline News, The Weather Channel, Animal Planet, Discovery Times, Boomerang, Nickelodeon (East & West?), NickToons, and college sports net CSTV with "more [channels] to be announced soon".

The cheapskate in me could be interested in this if the final channel mix is right. Thoughts?
______________

If they threw a few more channels in there (TLC, TV Land, Noggin, and Food Network come immediately to mind) I could see it being worth dropping our awful cable service for.

If this is true the lineup sounds pretty good, but why would they include channels like Boomerang, Nick West, and Nick Toons on this package when they are only available on the Top 120 or 180 packages otherwise?

Wanna bet that ABC Family and the religious channels aren't among them?

It's still cheaper than the AT 120 and 180 packages. Personally, I don't think they should be including any of the west coast feeds in this package. Include another channel instead. But I see that there still could be more channels added. It could be they'll take suggestions. I'll let them know to keep ABC Family OFF of it, simply because of the 700 Club, not to mention many of the movies they show are far from "family fare" (i.e. "Dirty Dancing", "Blazing Saddles" and pretty much anything that was R-rated).

Since I could not access the link, I am assuming that locals are NOT included in this, so add another $4.99 to the cost.

Makes sense but the idea is to get NEW people to sign up. NOT to have existing customers drop down a level and pay less. You all are happy to pay the money for the channels otherwise I can assume if it was so bad you'd drop them.

That is what I did with my cable. Once it hit $70/month I dropped it. I can't get a dish since I live in a "Garden" apartment in Chicago. I really don't miss it.
______________

They're gonna need at least one (if not more) of the general-entertainment networks to make this work, IMO. And it might be one that doesn't explicitly do 'family friendly' fare all the time to keep the adults interested. TV Land or Superstation WGN probably fits that bill; outlets like TNT, TBS, USA, or Spike probably won't.
______________

that's why you aren't seeing any general entertainment channels (TBS, TNT, WGN, etc.) in these packages and are seeing channels with strictly G rated programming, parents don't want "filth" coming into their homes and thye are to lazy to use the parental controls that come with set top boxes or V-chips that come with all new TV's.

Bingo!

This is precisely what bothers me most about this whole attack on television that the conservatives have launched. They lobbied for, and got, electronic controls with password protection which SHOULD be sufficient for them to protect their kids from programming that isn't rated TV-G or "safer". But they can't be bothered to actually activate the V-chip. (And it isn't that difficult; even though I don't have mine turned on, since I am the only one using this TV, I followed the very simple instructions and was able to get through the programming instructions in less than 90 seconds, including turning it back off afterwards.)

What we see here is likely a combination of "can't be bothered", "too lazy" and "we want to protect everyone from what we don't want to see". The damn ratings bugs out of every commercial break are driving me away. The people at the networks who thought viewers would get used to them are dead wrong in my case.

There will come a point -- and I believe it will come sooner rather than later in my case -- where it won't be worth the price of cable or satellite, and it won't be worth the effort to get a decent off-air signal. I'm building up my DVD library in preparation for that day.
______________

You're not alone. In planning a new house I've set it up so the second TV won't have any antenna, cable, or satellite connection available in the room where it'll be located. It will have DVD and VCR only. As to the primary TV, I've shelved the big-screen concept 'cause between the bugs and the way programming is falling apart it just isn't worth the money. Cable at the new location is unquestionably priced far beyond value rendered. Still some chance I'll again go with DISH, especially if (though I doubt) the new "family" tier has the stuff in it that I use. Of course much will depend on what's available off-air without having to put the effort into an outdoor antenna. May not be an issue since the transmitter sites for the new location are only about 20-miles away.
