Press release: PD/afternoon jock at 97.1/The River

We've gotten another PD from Portland (after Dave FM's Michelle Engel):

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

COX RADIO APPOINTS CHRIS MILLER PROGRAM DIRECTOR OF THE NEW 97.1 “THE RIVER” SERVING ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Atlanta, GA – March 31, 2006 – Cox Radio (NYSE: CXR) announced today the appointment of Chris Miller as Program Director of the New 97.1 “The River” serving Atlanta, Georgia. Miller had most recently served as Program Director at CBS Radio/KLTH in Portland, Oregon. His appointment is effective April 10, 2006.

“To help develop Atlanta’s next great radio station, I wanted a strategic-thinking Program Director with a solid track record,” said Dan Kearney, Vice President and General Manager of the New 97.1 The River and WSB-FM. “Chris’s extensive programming experience and previous work at Cox made this an easy decision.”

“The New 97.1 The River connects with Atlanta’s biggest Classic Hits fans. I look forward to getting started and providing our listeners with the music they want most. I am also very excited about opportunity to work at Cox Radio again. Its localized operating focus, combined with its tradition of providing great content, makes Cox Radio a great place to build a premiere station,” said Miller.

Prior to his six year stint as the Program Director at KLTH, Miller was Program Director of the Classic Hits station, KKRH in Portland. Between 1991-1993, Miller also served as Program Director of Cox Radio’s KLRX in Dallas, Texas. Joining Miller in Atlanta will be his wife and one son, age 13.

Atlanta’s New 97.1 The River plays only the best Classic Hits from the late 60’s, 70’s and early 80’s. Artists including the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, the Doobie Brothers, Elton John, and Boston – as well as Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and the Rolling Stones comprise The River’s playlist. The station carries the lowest commercial load in Atlanta radio – only eight minutes/eight units an hour.

The River

Exactly. A prerequisite for being a Cox PD- follow Bob Neil's (stale) playbook and don't rock the boat.

(y-a-w-n)

But, the station is off to one hell of a start. He's stepping into a situation that won't require (or be allowed) a lot of deep thought.

Geez...give the guy a break. While I generally agree with you about the Bob Neil thing, I think it's a little unfair to start jumping on the new guy before he even gets to town. He already faces an uphill battle, considering the big shoes he has to fill!

I'm just so glad Cox was able to find someone after 1980sRadio's abrupt resignation.... ;-) (And, yes, I think it IS Don Miller's twin cousin...)

The River

The previous poster took the new guy to task, not me. My comment was directed at the type of PDs Cox looks for, in general (not a personal comment against the new cat, who I know zero about).

Re: The River

OldiesCat "gets it" and understands the Cox Philosophy. Clark2, you're such a "tool".

Wow. I bow to your razor-sharp wit. Guess I'll just slink away in shame and admire your brilliant wordplay from afar.

It wasn't meant to sound like a slam. Maybe it did. Unintentional.

Wasn't there something about the three wise men being firemen because they were from afar?

Fair enough. My understanding of calling someone a "tool" is that it's a crude and obscene slur. But if you say that wasn't your intention, I'll take you at your word.

And yes, you are correct about the wise men.
