Preston Westmoreland on KKNT!

I accidentally pushed my preset to 960 KKNT and heard Preston Westmoreland's voice. He is subbing for Liddy and Hill and will take their shift until Friday. I believe he said it's been 31/2 years since he was on the air. Of course, Preston and the other callers couldn't mention the name of his 'other station.'

Based on Preston's long-time truncated enunciation of the
KTAR calls (as "KT'R"), he should be very, very, very, very
careful how he says "KKNT." ;D

Alert the police, people may fall asleep at the wheel listening to przzztn

Back off fellas. Preston is retired and is doing Liddy and Hill a favor. He is still active in his many charities -- without fanfare. To crunch him for a few days back behind the mike ain't too cool.

I worked with Preston for several years. Say what you want but he is a nice man. Guys like him are rare and hard to find these days. He did the right thing after KTAR and he and his wife are not only nice but I wish radio nowdays had guys like him running things.

KKNT? Almost as bad as the station in L.A. (not sure if it's there anymore) that was known as K-Lite. Calls were KLIT.

Speaking of "unfortunate" choices of callsigns:

In the late 1980s or early '90s, the station that is now KDUS ran a format targeting African-Americans. The call letters were KKKQ. As the Guinness boys would say, "Brilliant!" It became KUKQ in short order. Not sure if Gumpdusky owned the station then.

For a few months in late 1994 and early '95 when TMISU owned 96.9, they called it KCHT. Apparently somebody high up got their secret underwear in a bunch, thinking it could be interpreted as "K-S**t," so it became KHTC.

In the late 1920s, when the Arizona Republic bought KFAD, they changed the callsign to KREP. Apparently some listeners thought the station was "KRAP" (I didn't know Captain Stupor and Gaydos worked there in 1929. ;D ) so they changed it to KTAR a few months later.

I have been away from the Boards for a while but was sent a note on Preston so I went to see what was there. I am just appalled at the nasty comments about a man who has had an incredible 30+ year successful run in radio. Having been his producer at KTAR and his friend as well since I knew him for a number of years I think I might have an edge on those of you who are passing judgement. Preston doesn't deserve these negative remarks. He is a professional and he was employed by some of the biggest stations in the Valley for many years. He had big numbers along the way so that negates the dumb remarks on this board. This is one of the reasons I stopped reading the boards because of the unkind, uninformed comments of some people who probably have never had a job in radio or television, but have plenty of caustic remarks to make about those who have been successful in the business. Maybe those of you who are bashing Preston could benefit from a line from Bambi. "If you can say something nice, don't say nuttin at all." If you had the pleasure of knowning this truly fine man you wouldn't even consider writing the things that have been written about him this week or all the remarks of the past.
I'm an on-air radio person myself since the 1960's, and so I am not a wannabe.
