10 O'clock local newscasts have historically not worked in Canada. CITY-TV used to have 10 PM news - originally called CityPulse at 10, later CityPulse Tonight - then in 1995 they moved CityPulse Tonight to 11 PM. It was mainly because their "Great Movies" often ran overtime, and CityPulse Tonight was literally at a different time each night. In one week in 1994, CityPulse Tonight ran at 10 PM a couple nights, 10:30 PM another night, and 11 PM a couple others. Ontario's Global had a 10:30 newscast when it first signed on the air, but it quickly moved to 11.
I think that there is simply not enough competition in most Canadian markets to warrant 10 PM newscasts. In Toronto however one station should try it out; in fact Sun TV would be a good one since they already have news gathering resources, and they could promote it as a way to get the Toronto Sun's news before the next morning.
In the United States there are 10 PM newscasts because there are so many stations in each market that it is not practical for every single station to have news at the same time.
Edited by mjlarochelle on 09/26/05 11:49 AM.
