Prime time Nielsen ratings Week 1

Got this from USA Today this morning, and it's not a pretty picture. Of the
four major networks, only NBC is up in the ratings, as is cable. Ages 12-34
are watching less TV, and more viewing is shifting to DVRs, limiting networks'
ability to charge for skipped ads.

The standings, with the changes in audience over a year ago:

CBS 10.7 million viewers (-12%) #1 overall, #3 among young adults
ABC 8.3 million viewers (-16%) #2 overall, #4 among young adults
NBC 8.2 million viewers (+9%) #3 overall, #1 among young adults
Fox 6.9 million viewers (-18%) #4 overall, #2 among young adults

The top 20 (with viewers in millions):

1. Giants/Eagles (NBC) 22.8
2. NCIS (CBS) 20.5
3. NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS) 16.7
4. The Big Bang Theory (CBS) 15.7
5. Vegas (CBS) 14.8
6. Modern Family (ABC) 14.4
7. Person Of Interest (CBS) 14.3
8. Dancing With The Stars (ABC) 14.1
9. Elementary (CBS) 13.4
10. Two And A Half Men (CBS) 12.5
11. Football Night, Part 3 (NBC) 12.4
12. The Voice (Mon., NBC) 12.2
13. Dancing With The Stars Results (ABC) 11.8
14. Criminal Minds (CBS) 11.7
Grey's Anatomy (ABC) 11.7
16. The Voice (Tue., NBC) 11.6
17. 60 Minutes (CBS) 11.5
18. Once Upon A Time (ABC) 11.4
19. Blue Bloods (CBS) 11.2
20. The Mentalist (CBS) 11.1

Cable Top 10:

1. Broncos/Falcons (ESPN) Mon 8:30 16.2
2. Giants/Panthers (NFLN) Thu 8:30 8.1
3. Major Crimes (TNT) Mon 9:00 4.3
4. Pre-kickoff (NFLN) Thu 8:00 4.2
5. WWE Raw (USA) Mon 9:00 4.0
6. Sons Of Anarchy (FX) Tue 10:00 3.8
WWE Raw (USA) Mon 8:00 3.8
8. WWE Raw (USA) Mon 10:00 3.6
9. LSU/Auburn (ESPN) Sat 9:21 3.5
Housewives Of New Jersey (Bravo) Sun 10:00 3.5
The O'Reilly Factor (Fox News) Wed 8:00 3.5

Now for the good and bad for the big four broadcast networks:

CBS: Two most watched new shows, Vegas and Elementary.
NCIS the week's most watched series.
The Big Bang Theory is up to 15.7 million viewers (18.8
when the weekend replay is factored in).
BUT:
Monday-night comedies are down, with Made In Jersey
(7.8 million viewers) and Partners (6.6 million) the weak spots.
The Good Wife (9.9 million viewers) and The Mentalist (11.1
million) are down on Sunday.

ABC: Modern Family (14.4 million) is the top comedy among young viewers;
ties with NBC's Revolution as the top DVR gainer.
Revenge (9.7 million) fills in nicely at its new time, Sunday 9 PM.
Grey's Anatomy (11.1 million) benefited from a big cliffhanger.
Castle (10.5 million) and Once Upon A Time (11.4 million) remain healthy.
BUT:
Dancing With The Stars (14.1 million) is down 26% over a year ago.
666 Park Avenue (6.9 million) is not doing what the network expected.

NBC: The Voice is drawing about 12 million viewers and is hot with younger viewers.
Revolution (9.2 million) is number one with younger viewers and has been extended
for the full season.
Sunday Night Football is the top-rated program.
BUT:
Thursday sitcoms are uniformly down.
Rock Center (3.1 million) is the lowest-rated big-network show.
Guys With Kids (4.8 million) and Animal Practice (5.2 million) seem to be rejected.

Fox: The X Factor trails The Voice (9.6 million Wednesday) but is Fox's top young draw;
The Simpsons (8.1 million in season 24) is second.
Glee gets a 50% boost in young viewers who DVD it.
BUT:
Mob Doctor (3.8 million and declining) may be the season's first casualty.
Tuesday sitcoms are not doing as well as Sunday animated shows.
Fringe (3.1 million), in its final season, got no bump. USA Today says this was no surprise.

Of course, things can change. Right now I like NBC's chances of moving into second place overall.

Surprised LAW AND ORDER SVU isn't on the list. Can't believe TWO and a HALF is doing so good.

Actually that does not look good for any of the newcomers.
Old tried and true shows riding high.
