Primetime top 10 to date

From today's USA Today, the top ten, season to date, based
on the average number of people (in millions) watching. Numbers
are the number of million viewers:

1. NCIS (CBS) 21.7
2. Two And A Half Men (CBS) 20.8
3. Sunday Night Football (NBC) 20.7
4. Dancing With The Stars (ABC) 18.0
5. NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS) 17.5
6. Modern Family (ABC) 16.5
The Big Bang Theory (CBS) 16.5
8. Dancing With The Stars Results (ABC) 15.6
9. The Mentalist (CBS) 15.3
10. Criminal Minds (CBS) 15.2

There are no scripted programs from Fox or NBC to be seen. Of course, this would change if the 18 to 49 numbers that most advertisers use to purchase ad space were provided.

And these ratings mean absolutely nothing to anyone in the industry. They are Gee Whiz Facts for the general public. TV exists to sell advertising. And ad buyers live under the mistaken notion that all that matters are Adults 25-49. Those Top 10 ratings are rarely hyped/understood/reported.

So, in other words, these ratings are to television as the 6+ numbers are to radio?

Apparently, Two And A Half Men appears to be "winning" sans Sheen (cue the "America's most-watched comedy!" promos).

Two And A Half Men had such a huge start out of the gate, it's hard to say how it will average out at the end.

And even if it does win now, it's hard to say how it will replay in reruns. It's like the Happy Days episodes without Richie. The show went on just fine without Ron Howard, but in reruns, to most people, the episodes without Howard are just awful.

Same for a lot of other shows, like Three's Company minus the Ropers and Somers. In first run it did well, but in reruns the later episodes are not fan favourites and don't play well.

Looks like NBC needs the NFL to expand to an 82 game season or they're toast

I don't have any season-to-date numbers for the 18-49 age group,
but I do have last week's top 20, again from USA Today (I will not
post the ratings so as not to get into trouble with Nielsen, only
the rankings):

1. NFL: Ravens/Steelers (NBC)
2. NCAA Football: LSU/Alabama (CBS)
3. The OT (Fox)
4. Modern Family (ABC)
5. Big Bang Theory (CBS)
6. Football Night, Part 3 (NBC)
7. Two And A Half Men (CBS--now ranks ninth overall)
8. 2 Broke Girls (CBS)
9. How I Met Your Mother (CBS)
10. X Factor (Wed., Fox)
11. NCIS (CBS)
12. Once Upon A Time (ABC)
Mike & Molly (CBS)
The Simpsons (Fox)
X Factor (Thu., Fox)
16. Criminal Minds (CBS)
Rules Of Engagement (CBS)
18. Survivor: South Pacific (CBS)
19. Grey's Anatomy (ABC)
New Girl (Fox)

Compare with last week's overall top 20:

1. NFL: Ravens/Steelers (NBC)
2. NCAA Football: LSU/Alabama (CBS)
3. NCIS (CBS)
4. Dancing With The Stars (ABC)
5. Big Bang Theory (CBS)
6. The OT (Fox)
7. NCIS: Los Angeles (CBS)
8. Dancing With The Stars Results (ABC)
9. Two And A Half Men (CBS) (has dropped from first
to ninth)
10. The Mentalist (CBS)
11. 60 Minutes (CBS)
Modern Family (ABC)
13. Football Night, Part 3 (NBC)
14. Criminal Minds (CBS)
15. Blue Bloods (CBS)
16. Castle (ABC)
17. Survivor: South Pacific (CBS)
18. Person Of Interest (CBS)
Rules Of Engagement (CBS)
X Factor (Wed., Fox)

Something's wrong. You have the same #1 and #2 on both lists. Both were live events.

There's nothing wrong; I don't know about the NFL game
but I expected big numbers for LSU-Alabama since they
went into that game as the #1 and #2 teams, respectively.

What you will note is that there are a couple of scripted Fox
shows in the 18-49 list: "The Simpsons" and "New Girl," and
more sitcoms on the 18-49 list. You'll also notice the absence
of "60 Minutes" on the 18-49 list (no surprise) despite the tribute
to Andy Rooney, "Dancing With The Stars" is not on the 18-49 list,
and the highest-rated regular series, "NCIS," seems to skew more
toward older viewers; likewise, "Person Of Interest," a favorite of
my dad's (he's in his 70s), didn't crack the 18-49 top 20.

But there are still no scripted NBC shows on either list.
