anyone using this sytem? i know they have a cd pro (which does it all) and a cd sat (sat. and live assist).i'm aware that it's has close ties to the old cartworks system which was great back in the day..any input appreciated.
I installed one of these "back in the day" and the cd system worked great for the time. We had to replace players on a regular basis. The system used 5 disc changers and it was alwys a hassle because not only did you schedule music, you had to amke sure that what you played would not conflict with the same player. And this always became an Eningeering issue.
The reason they used CD's was because no one ahd a hard drive system capable of mass storage at this point.
You might call them to see what upgrades are available.
Compared to what is available the old system is a joke in today's technology. Anything of this era woul be though.
Having used the latest CDS32 on-air, to me it seems better suited for automation than for live operations. Some reasons:
-CDS32's "music log" app has two modes - "automation" and "manual". This means operators have NO control over segue points, and if you want to stop it for a break, you need to remember to switch it into manual or else it won't stop. A "live assist" mode would be nice.
-When restarting playback after being stopped in "manual mode" - you have to play the next item on the log. Want to change it or insert something else? Fuggedaboutit. It won't let you. Only way to do it is to force CDS32 to play the cued item.
-Log changes are an adventure if you make a mistake and decide to cancel before inserting an item - more often than not the system will crash.
-When a new hour starts, CDS32 drops everything left over from the previous hour - including spots. Even if it's in the middle of a stopset. Not cool. Want to play those missed spots? Cut and paste one at a time into the next hour.
-If you run a TOH ID, you have to remember not to schedule any produced audio in the last few minutes of an hour. Here's why: If a song is playing and the clock rolls over to the next hour, CDS32 plays any non-song item (can't remember the categories right now) scheduled after the currently playing song THEN rolls over to the top of the next hour. So you get two liners back-to-back.
-Production operations are a bit of a challenge - in some ways it almost feels like parts of different systems were cobbled together to make it work.
thanks rob.i use and love Nexgen for my station..i was looking at one of these systems used.the station was using the cds 32 sat version, for sat format and i guess some live assist, interesing it does not have a live assist mode...A station i'm doing contract work for is looking for something, but they will be live or live assist, music on hard drive,no sat format. This system sounds buggy to me.it was a merge of the old cart works system from back in the 80's with whatever pristine was using.they have a cds 32 pro,cds32 sat and a cds32 live, which i think is a cart replacement program.appreciate your input.
I have an Enco system sitting in the closet (still plugged and running). Server, 3 hardware keys (1 is dos) and audio cards. One computer has the newer cards the dos box has Antex.
will probably look at Nexgen or Wireready and roll our own computers.Never had the enco experience,do you have a price in mind for it? Got a dalet quote one time,WOW,those French folks really know how to poke it in you,so to speak.
We bought the Pristine logger software and couldn't get it to work at all. Their support wasn't helpful...no refunds. We ended up getting the Telos logger software and haven't looked back once.
It's possible Pristine's automation systems are the bee's knees or were absolutely unbelievable rock solid gold years back...but, I doubt it.
FWIW - Enco has been around a long time (meaning stable tech support) and has a big user community that always helps each other out. However, sometimes it seems like you need a computer science degree to configure it. That's because a lot of what it does is set up with a proprietary programming language created by Enco. Once you get the hang of it - it's very powerful - but the learning curve is steep.
I think you're on the right track with Prophet or WireReady.
