Private Practice Canceled

It was in her contract that she could go back if she wanted if "Practice" was cancelled. So the ball is in her court.

Would this be the first time a series lasted longer than its spinoff, the spinoff being on the air at least five years?

Happy Days (11 seasons) lasted longer than Laverne & Shirley (eight seasons), All in the Family out-lasted Maude (nine seasons to six), and The Cosby Show went eight seasons to A Different World's six. Those are some prominent examples.

I think the question was in regard to the spinoff being cancelled before the parent show, not the duration of the two shows. I think its safe to assume that the original show is the more successful of the two and will last longer in number of seasons (with just a few exceptions where the spinoff is more successful).

I checked and both "Cheers" and "Frasier" lasted 11 seasons. In terms of the length of time between the premiere and the series finale, "Frasier" wins by about a week.

Law and Order had multiple spin offs that lasted shorter than the original.

Case in point: Law and Order - Trial by Jury. lasted only one season on NBC.

The original L&O lasted 20 seasons (1990 - 2010)

So far, L&O-SVU is in its 14th season (started in 1999)- so it will have to survive about 6 more years to equal the longevity of the original.

And "Law & Order: Los Angeles" also ran only one season.

One that quickly comes to mind is "Promised Land," the Gerald McRaney vehicle that was a spin-off of "Touched by an Angel." The parent series ran from 1994-2003 (nine seasons), while the spawn only ran from 1996-1999 (three seasons).

Didn't The Happy Days spinoff Joanie and Chotche(I'm sure I mispelled that), only last about a year? Then they returned to Happy Days until the end?

Private Practice didn't have the ratings to justify it's existence this long.

This show got a lot of unwarranted support from the network.

ABC didn't want to make Shonda Rhimes unhappy/mad?
