Prize, consideration, chance

Have a question regarding the spots on the air for Fan Duel. All during my PD, OM, GM tenures lawyers made sure my stations avoided running anything that smelled like gambling. For those unfamiliar it appears that Fan Duel is Fantasy Football and wagering. They say you can put up $$ and they match and there are $ payouts...maybe someone can explain this situation to me that this isn't gambling or advertising gambling. Back in the day we couldn't run PSA's for church bingo...

The FCC Regulations have probably changed. I see TV spots for Native American casinos all the time. They brag about their big slot machine payouts.

The rules changed dramatically back in the 70s when the states started running lotteries. Michigan radio and TV stations, in particular, were screaming at the FCC because CKLW had no such stupid restrictions and was making a BIG deal out of the fact that they had the Michigan lottery numbers that no Michigan station was allowed to give the listeners. And that big signal got into New York at night and we did the same thing with the New York lottery numbers. It didn't take long for the FCC to understand the error of its ways.

To my knowledge the state run lottery and Native American reservation casinos were exempt from the FCC gambling advertising rules. Maybe a FCC atty reads this site. Just curious on my part. As an aside...nice resume Sarasota Jim..some real good stations!

Nope. They were not exempt.
And thanks for the comment on the resume. All I can say is that there's a lot of truth in the old adage, "I'd rather be lucky than good." There are a lot of talented guys out there, many more than can land a consequential spot with the big boys. This has been an extremely good life, much more than one would expect for a kid from the mountains.

Here's the current rule: http://www.hallikainen.com/FccRules/2013/73/1211/index.php

I had started at a radio statioon in NY that beamed into Canada..a lot of foreign language shows (usually RELIGOUS) on Sunday. Each Sunday this very cute couple paid for an hour show called "Memories of Lithuania" in which I engineered...after my ID in English I would intro the two older hosts..and they would launch into Lithuanian news etc..but about halfway thru the hour..the studio phone would ring..a very hard to understand man would demand to talk to the male host..and while his wife prattled on..he was writing down all this stuff in a composition notebook...he would then come in to me and say "Jeff..when I point at you play the 'special theme' my friend"..and I did..then they started in reading from the book..took about 10 minutes..One Sunday the cops showed up with Ontario Provincial Police..and hauled them out of the station..never to be seen again. Apparently we were announcing "fixed" numbers for a Hamilton, Ontario numbers racket..every Sunday...at 11:35am..all these people would listen to get the "special numbers" to avoid playing in order to increase their chances of winning a very illegal underground lottery..so Fantasy Football is no big deal.
