Pro Announcer/Symetrix 528/DBX286?

Hey Fish...Get you a Valley Peoples processor! LOL...if you can find one, those are the best! I just took over a group of stations in Illinois that still use them on their mic chains, and sound better than I've heard in years!

Zack, ditto on the valley's.some of the early dbx units like the 160 were very good, i use air corp, have 2 of the valley 401's in great condition, may part with one if Catfish is interested.never was a big fan of the 528.and the mic-maze is a very good unit.now as we know mic processing is like audio processing and we've all been down that road alot...years ago i used the valley gain brain on AM awesome unit.galaxy audio still services the valley units today..early urei la3's were darn good on mic too..

Another vote for the Valley 401 which is still supported by the company. Easy to set-up. Great sound. I never could get the 528E sound right. Alsop hearing great stuff about the new Aphex voice processor. Anyone working with the Aphex?

Zack,

I use to work on the Valley People 401. I loved it. Want to sell me one?? ;D

Oldiesstation:

Let's talk bro! You want to sell the 401? I noticed you mentioned the dbx 160. I have a 166a and it's ok, but it just doesn't hold up the levels especially when i speak softly.

What do you think of the DBX 286?

dbx 286 is an excellent vocal compressor. The compressor part was designed by Bob Orban. Sounds much better than some of the other, more expensive units...

Goran Tomas

I've found the dbx 286 to be quite inadequate for a "major market sound" it you're looking for aggressive to semi-aggressive loudness for voiceovers and on-air mic processing. I have a Pro Announcer, which works well, and one of my voice track jocks uses it in his home studio. I have a 401 that worked great until the two of the front panel pots got snapped (I've got to call Galaxy to get the parts). I've also had excellent results with the Rane VP-12. Three of my remote voice trackers use it and I have two in the on-air studio. I picked them up for a song on ebay!

Don't know much about the DBX processor, but I've had good luck with the 528 and the Air Corp. - good luck. BTW - the Berrenger mic processors are junk - I put 7 of them in a station that the chief insisted on that brand - every one of them was loaded with digital artifact unless you set them up for almost no effect.

Amen on the Beringers...god what junk! Same situation while I was at a station in Wichita Falls...they insisted on the Beringers because they were "cheap"...could get 4 for the price of one good one.

My favorite vocal processing setup: Valley Kepex II into Valley Gain Brain II... it's all you need. Good luck finding them though :)

I like the sound of the DBX units, but with 14 in use and some locked up so they can not be played with, I have had too many switches fail for no reason. The stereo couple switch just fails and you loose 1 channel. I have had some 166 for years with no problems.

Check the latest issue of radio world. Our LA guy, Mark pallock has an article on the new Aphex proc. Sounds like it may be winner!
