PRO-FM Signal

This signal must boom through Rhode Island and Southern Mass. I live in Tyngsboro Mass, a stonesthrow from New Hampshire. I recently discovered that I get a pretty decent signal of PRO FM on any car radio in my driveway, with RDS and everything, and also on the FM receiver in my I-Pod when near windows. All of this despite being right next door to WXRV 92.5 in Haverhill MA and being pretty far away. Thank god WXRV doesn't run HD!

I routinely tune into PRO-FM north of Boston, in Medford, Somerville, Malden. It's been a preset since the '80's. If you look on Radio-Locator.com their signal reaches Hartford, Springfield, Worcester, Fitchburg, and all of Boston.

That signal is easily one of the best in RI, probably #3 to WEEI-FM and WHJY.

The Neutakonakut (sic) hilled signals suffer when you are heading north-west out of the state due to the terrain up there.
(Rte 146, the tend to suffer along stretches, especially closer to Worcester). Whereas the Rehoboth signals (93.3, 101.5) and WHJY don't suffer the same effects.

I have picked up WPRO-FM as far north as Portsmouth, NH, and as far south as Orient Point, Long Island. It also has a decent signal over much of the Cape. I have never picked it up, however, in Hartford or Springfield.

WHJY seems to have better westward reach. Whereas PRO-FM fades quicky after Mystic, I have picked up WHJY as far west as Clinton (along I-95) and even downtown Hartford. WEEI-FM also has outstanding reach. It has an excellent signal in three distinct markets: New London, Providence, and New Bedford. I have picked up WEEI-FM as far west as Bridgeport and as far south as Long Island. WEEI-FM's only weakness is north into the Boston area.

From a CT/Western MA standpoint, I'd say WEEI-FM has the best signal... I've had WEEI-FM all the way to Danbury in the middle of winter. They are routinely perceptible in most of the Hartford metro area...and they make it into Springfield, north of that it's a fight with WKNE-FM from Keene.

WHJY is a close second....they make it better into the Springfield area - even out towards Westfield pretty good too, but have a harder time in the Hartford area.

WWLI is 3rd as far as towards Springfield/Hartford...before IBOC, WPRO and WWLI were pretty routine out towards Hartford, but now WWYZ's IBOC kills WPRO all the way to the Willimantic area.

92.3 comes in almost like a local here in Roslindale, MA (over 40+ mi away). This station comes in great where I grew up on the South Shore also (SE of Boston). It seems their signal is great all over Eastern New England, even to the north with 92.5 close by. Luckily they don't run HD so it's definitely possible to haul it in regularly.

You can hear 92.3 PRO-FM spotty up into Wells, ME where with a decent radio, you start to get choppy between it and Moose from Augusta.

92.1 from Sanford, ME is probably a factor as well. Back in the early 1970's, before WSME-FM (now WFEX)/92.1 came on in late '74, WPRO-FM was a regular signal way up in East Wakefield, NH. , about 12 miles south of Ossipee. 105.1 (then WPJB-FM) also did fairly well there as well.

Nope it wasn't even a factor, I am happy to say. (My car stereo has excellent adjacent channel rejection...)
