Pro Tools Installation Help

I have always wanted to learn the ins and outs of Protools. Recently I found our IT guy has an old Digi 2 box and valid registration but it runs on WIndows 98 and 2000. (Yes, it's old and many people ask WHY... basically I just like to learn).

I am trying to download the upgrade on Digidesign's site, but it won't accept the registration code for some reason. When I call support they are no help and are trying to push new hardware. Is there such an upgrade that would make this installable on Either XP or Vista ( preferably XP ) ?? Like I said, it was purchased and has a valid license. I was hoping there's an installation CD I could get my hands on somehow.

If anyone has any insight, It'd be much appreciated.

Thank you!

I've used several iterations of PT over the years...and even when I had an older version, I've almost always been able to get the support guys to help me out if I needed to go backwards. However, if it's a really old version of the software, you probably won't be able to get the software that you're looking for.

If it's a DIGI 001, they end-of-lifed that box several years ago. In which case, you won't be able to get support for it anymore.

At this point, your best bet is to probably just look at ebay and see if you can find somebody who can sell you the version of ProTools that might work for you.

You can't use a super-old registration code to download the latest software...and if it's old hardware like an 001, then the new software probably won't work anyway.

If I'm reading this correctly, you've got a Digi 002, which even though it's been replaced by the Digi 003, is still an excellent interface. In fact, I use one myself every day.

If it is an 002, the easiest thing to do is purchase the full version of the current ProTools software (7.4) from Digidesign. It'll cost about $75. Not too bad when you consider the 002 is a $1200 system. Instead of the download, buy the DVD-ROM so you'll be sure to get the full system and not just the upgrade.

Before buying the software, you may need to transfer the registration into your name. I don't think there's a charge on this and I believe you can do it online.

One huge thing to know about ProTools...you can't record audio on the same hard drive where the ProTools software lives. It'll not only crash your system, it'll actually tear your drive to pieces. Make sure you have a second drive, either inboard or outboard, to record audio. Also, make sure the drive is Digidesign certified. You can check the list on their website to make sure your drive is supported.

Hope this helps!
