Problem at NBC?

It didn't start until 10:38 where I am. They must be adding a few more minutes so the local stations can squeeze in more commercials. I don't know what good it will do. For years our local stations would run long and cut into the Tonight Show. They gave them 5 extra minutes and they still ran long. What frustrating is when they squeeze in one more commercial knowing good and well it won't fit. One of the most irritating things is when the station ID is up with that background music and you know the show has already started and they won't switch to the network. They just leave the damn ID slide up.

It wasn't any of that; there was a technical mess-up with an act on America's Got Talent and instead of doing what every other talent show in the world would do and disqualify the act or exempt them for not being ready so they could get to the next show on time, they waited around and let them work out their problems, so everyone like me who was waiting for Parenthood to come on at 9pm Central had to wait for this stupid act to finish, get their rating from the judges, and then the rundown of the acts from earlier in the show/text/toll-free numbers and pitch to watch tomorrow night.

Then we got to Parenthood at 9:04pm, but instead of cutting out four minutes of commercials which would've got us back to being on time at 10pm, they kept them in so the show didn't end until 10:04pm. And obviously the local stations aren't about to give up their five minutes of ad time, so there's your Leno start at 10:38pm.

Between this incident and the US Open on CBS yesterday (which again was delayed until yesterday for the men's final, and again ran late because the USTA doesn't want to put a roof on their stadium, and forced last night's "Craig Ferguson" to tonight instead), it's getting annoying. Someone needs to get these producers a stopwatch or step in and get smarter about scheduling. And whoever was the stage manager at AGT tonight is hopefully getting a nice dressing down from their bosses.

Of course, they could have done what they did to some shows in the past if sports run over -- just start the next program in progress. Though apparently, they don't want to make Ron Howard any more angrier than he probably was by delaying the show, so here we are.

Tonight was the season premiere of Parenthood, so 'joining in progress' would definitely not have worked (a rerun wouldn't have been a problem at all). I also had to deal with my station asleep at the wheel and triggering their local commercial break where it would've been normally, so I missed part of a scene on top of the AGT-caused delay. All in all, a pretty frustrating night of trying to watch an NBC show.

Normally the clock on my cable box says 11:34PM when Jay Leno starts. Today it didn't start until 11:37PM.

If that's NBC's new start time for Leno, you can bet CBS will match that with Letterman soon enough!

Actually, I think it would be smart of CBS not to match NBC's late start time for late night programming. I say start Letterman before Leno, giving people who tuned out of the commercials on NBC a chance to sample their programming and hopefully stay around. That would be my strategy.

Then we got to Parenthood at 9:04pm,

In Canada, NBC switched to Global (Thank-you Sim Sub!) immediately. Parenthood started on time.
Those who wanted to see the ending had to be on City TV, but then you'd miss the first few minutes of Parenthood.

With CRTC dictating that 95% of the programming must be identical, I gather no rules were broken...if it were a few more minutes over, Global tv (or the cable company) would have been in serious trouble!

Now that the fall season is here I'm gonna be checking out Christina Applegate's new show - "Up All Night" (though not until next week as I don't get out of work until 10:15 tonight) and of course I'll be watching "The Biggest Loser" when it starts next week.

I'll spare you the trouble of catching "Up All Night".
It's not at all good.

Hank Azaria's new show is a yawner too.

Though it seems that there's nothing more that Canadian broadcasters and cable / sat companies love than getting away with it. While the CRTC has warned the media not to abuse simsubs beyond the letter of the law, they were hesitant to slap sanctions or fines on the violators.
