Problem with ITC Delta Record Amp

Hi Folks-:
I'm hoping someone with a considerable bit more knowledge than I, can help. I have an ITC Delta Record Amp (& associated Playback machine)--which I'm trying to Record onto. I have hooked up the Connector (to the Playback Unit), plugged in the A-C, hooked up appropriate Input & Output plugs. I tested the playback unit--Playback works--Play, FF, etc. Now I bulk erase a cart--insert it into the Record Amp--which is recording DIRECTLY from a MiniDisc (XLR outputs)--I set my meter to "REC", push the Record Button (RED)--see levels--I now push the Play button (listening to the cart playback on my mixer)--NOTHING--levels are still going--Nada, No Audio. Do I have a "lemon"--or am I missing some "adjustment". Keep in mind, I'm NOT an Engineer (& don't play one on TV, either :)--so I'm not arbitrarily messing with those circuit boards--although if someone thinks the problem is there, i would "take a shot" (given some specific details).
Thanks In Advance --especially for reading.

are you sure about the connections on the playback unit.do you have a cartridge that you can test it on? a pre-recorded cartridge you know is good? These units go way back and knowledge can be fleeting,if you know what i mean.do you have a manual?you may have a bad record card.Tuff to trouble shoot from a distance.do you have an engineer friend you can get to help you? Other that diodes and some transistor replacements, these units were very reliable...

>>are you sure about the connections on the playback unit.do you have a cartridge that you can test it on? << All I can tell you is that the Playback unit PLAYS!! What MORE is there to be sure of? I played several carts on the playback unit--so It isn't the playback per se--. I might indeed have a bad reocrd card--tough to tell--which one is it? Yes, i DO have the manual--trying to understand the manual--I have a better chance of learning to speak Spanish, first!:) These are NOT "user friendly" manuals with schematics galore--as I have tried to refer to it, but it is "Engineer-oriented".

sounds like it's in the record unit.know how to use a multimeter?make sure all the connections are ok.was it recently shipped to you?Might have gotten the famous UPS bounce.when i send stuff UPS i always write "fragile, throw underhand" on the box.(ha)..

No, don't know how to use a multi-meter--yes it WAS recently shipped to me (via U-P-S) but the person whom I purchased it from cannot "confirm" whether it was able to record ("Transition Owner")--he was just able to confirm the Recording Meter worked--which is true. Checked & RE-setaed all the cicruit cards (3) in the Recorder Unit, sot hat "eliminates" the circuit card being unseated aspect.

These record amps were known for popping IC's, especially (but limited to) when the interconnect cable was connected "hot." Unfortunately, not easy to fix, unless you just shot-gun chips, and, as I recall, they have an eprom in there that can be popped.

Thanks for your response "oldiesstation"--as you suggested, moved the post over to "Engineering".
As far as looking for parts--I'd like to try & diagnose what exactly the problem is--(with the help of some "pros")-- so i nknow what parts to look for!

Also been way too many years since I worked on one but do I remember there were TWO interconnect cables between the record and playback deck? One shielded and one ribbon?

Another question since you are not an engineer. Does the playback deck have a record head in it? You have to have 2 heads in the playback deck, one for record and one for playback. If the playback deck was originally built as playback only, it may not have the record head in it.

Hi Vetguy--problem has been solved--but first this is an ITC Delta--ONE cable interconnects between Record AMP & Playback unit. But you pretty much "hit the nail on the head"--the head that I ASSUMED was a RECORD head was a "Dummy" head--I compared it with another ITC Delta Playback unit--which, being Playback ONLY has the "dummy head"--they're EXACT--might as well be the Doublemint Twins--so, since it's NOT a RECORD head--ain't "nothin' gettin' Recorded"!!
Thanks to all who responded--job well done!!!
