Problems for Lufkin Radio Station Owner

Oh wow.

Lets see....

Businesses that advertise with Yates get the newspaper.
Businesses see Yates in the newspaper, arrested for DUI.
Businesses wish not not be associated with that.
Businesses pull their advertising from Yates Broadcasting.
Yates Broadcasting has no money.

... Sadly, I think that's how small-town mentality works!

I don't think you know as much about small town mentality as you think you do. You watch too much TV. I Couldn't disagree more.

I grew up in Lufkin and I've lived there off and on over a lot of years, and I'll bet a month's pay it won't affect Yates' stations ad revenue much, if at all.

People up there don't pay a lot of attention to the private problems of local radio people. Small town radio has always had its share of drunk DJ's and even station managers and owners, and sometimes they get into the news for being drunks.

Yes it is probable that he'll lose a few advertisers, but I think people in small markets are quick to forgive and forget, especially when it's the son of a local radio broadcasting legend like Stephen Yates' father was.

Stephen will be lucky if he doesn't get some prison time for violating terms of his probation, but whatever happens, and whenever he comes home, I think people in Lufkin will welcome him home and forgive him.

That's because there's not a family in east Texas -- not one -- that doesn't have at least one problem drinker in its midst. People up there can identify with the problem of alcoholism and they sympathise with those who suffer from it. My money is on Stephen.

Interesting point of view. Actually quite fantastic point of view! I grew up in Lufkin, and started my radio career there as well. I've known Stephen, his brother, and mother and father, for years. I wouldn't discount the people of east Texas so quickly. They do forgive and forget, but may not this time around. Stephen has done some pretty questionable things over the years, in my opinion, and I'm a firm believer in, "what goes around, comes around"...and things are definately coming around for him. Remember when Stephen took his mother and father to court to wrestle those radio stations away from them? What kind of a man does that to his parents, who not only were elderly, but in poor health? I wouldn't be suprised if he didn't lose the, ALL IMPORTANT, Lufkin Panthers High School football contract over this arrest. That would be BIG trouble for Yates Broadcasting. Stephen is the son of a legendary radio man,,but Stephen is NOT his father. I'm not putting my money on Stephen or Yates Broadcasting.

It's been a few years since I lived in Lufkin so I didn't know Stephen took his parents to court to get the radio stations away from them. When did he do that? Do you remember any of the details of how that went down?

Knowing this does change my opinion of Stephen, but I still hope he gets through this current problem without any lengthy jail time.

Even if he does, I think you're right about him probably losing Lufkin HS football.
